JOG FALLS
Jog Falls is a waterfall on the Sharavati river located in the Western Ghats running between Uttara Kannada and Shimoga districts of Karnataka, India.
Jog Falls is created by the Sharavati dropping 253 m, making it the third-highest waterfall in India after the Nohkalikai Falls with a drop of 335 m, in Meghalaya and the Dudhsagar Falls with a drop of 310 m, in Goa.
It is a segmented waterfall which depends on rain and season to become a plunge waterfall. The falls are major attractions for tourists and is ranked 36th in the list of free-falling waterfalls.
Four cascades, known as Raja, Rani, Rover and Rocket merge to form the huge waterfall on the Sharavathi River. The falls are locally known as Gersoppa Falls and Jogada Gundi. Jog itself is a Kannada word, which means falls.
It is one of nature’s splendid masterpieces and is situated in the dense evergreen forests. The effect of these striking falls is enhanced by the wild and beautiful region around it which is covered with plenty of abundant vegetation. This waterfall drops directly down without streaming on the rocks.
The hydro-electric project was conceived by the government of Mysore in mid-1943. A scheme to generate 64,000 horsepower at a cost of ₹358 lakh was designed.
There are two open viewing decks from where the visitors can see the waterfalls. one is located near the main entrance and parking area whereas the additional one near the inspection bungalow.
During the season, tourists can go down 1400 steps to the base of waterfalls and view the beauty and sound of nature at its best.
The beauty of the waterfalls is enhanced by the lush green surroundings, which provide a scenic backdrop.
