Vanhal played organ, violin and cello. He was born an indentured servant and bought his freedom through his music.

Johann Křtitel (Baptist) WANHAL (Vaňhal) 1739 - 1813 was born into serfdom in a Czech peasant family. He received his first musical training from his family and local musicians ... his patron, the Countess Schaffgotsch, took him to Vienna as part of her personal train in 1760. There he established himself as a teacher of singing, violin and piano to the high nobility, and he was invited to conduct his symphonies for illustrious patrons such as the Erdődy families ... He met his fellow Bohemians Gluck and Florian Gassmann in Venice and Rome respectively ... Legendary account of the string quartet Wanhal played together with Haydn, Mozart and Dittersdorf in 1784. After 1787 , he seems to have ceased performing in public …

A truly beautiful concerto. I hadn’t heard anything so nice written for such an unlikely instrument. Thank you for uploading it. 👍🏼

Tried to post two comments regarding a lovely bio about Vanhal on Allmusic and got blocked. Look it up.

When you said Double Bass I was expecting a metal remix. Disappointed. JK. The quality here sounds particularly good. What audio format?
