This chorale makes Israel speak ("wir", then "thus says Israel", this process of situating the text in progress is a stage direction); The general meaning of the text: we are nothing, threatened by so many men.
In this program, this chorale is the one most in the style of the 17th century, the era of this composer. It is an ornate chorale, on a simple, refined polyphonic base, which has a great musical effect, exactly like the polyphony of the Renaissance, which can have a strong musical presence, without resorting to later inventions whose vocation is to seduce more directly: overall there is more brilliant music, or an expressiveness constructed in the 18th century than during the two previous centuries, where there is a lot of music that is both rigorous and of great depth of expression.
