This short Fugue is a great example of the genre. The first seven notes form the fugue subject. This subject reappears time and time again in various keys across the different lines played by the hands. It then does the same in the pedals. Pachelbel weaves all of this action together in a truly expert way to create a coherent and thrilling piece of music. Playing fugues is one of the delights of playing the organ - it's always particularly satisfying when the subject emerges every so often on the pedals!
My previous video is the wonderful Toccata which is often paired with this Fugue.
Played by Paul Broadhurst on the vintage "Father Willis" organ of Christ Church, Birkenhead, UK.
Recorded 27 May 2024
Thumbnail: The opposite view from that in the thumbnail for the Toccata in the previous video. This time we're looking past the Great Trumpets, over the Choir division towards the front of the Swell box.
