What a struggle! I just couldn't get the "essence" of it. There are not so many professional renditions out there, and they had so much rubato, each one at different spots, that I got completely confused. I didn't feel a melody, just slurred intervals. And the notation sent opposite information: 3/4 and "waltz" which indicates a strong emphasis on the first beat, but a slur from high note to lower over 3-1, which made me want to subconsciously emphasize 3. The result was a mess, total indecisiveness, many question marks. I couldn't FEEL the piece, I couldn't even learn by imitation, because what I heard didn't make any sense to me.
It was Leah from @LeCheileMusic who jokingly replied in a forum: To me it's like the soprano's singing: "I yearn, I mourn, I cry, I die".
That was the missing puzzle piece. Can it be any more stupid, but same time any more helpful? Suddenly I heard the right emphasis on 1, and could make sense out of what just felt like unmotivated intervals to me.
I wrote full lyrics for the whole piece to guide me through right emphasis plus right emotion, which help me also navigate through rubato intuitively.
This will never be my favourite piece of music, but I learned a lot:
how to find the essence of a piece when you feel lost
how lyrics can help overcome difficulties (e.g. jn rhythm, pulse, rubato)
how grateful I am to be part of such a great online community
