I attended the UK's Black Lives Matter protests earlier today and was delighted by the show of solidarity from the tens of thousands of people, of all races, who were in attendance.
George Floyd's murder at the hands of the Minneapolis police was not an isolated incident in the US, rather the straw that broke the donkey's back! America is now in the flux of change and ripples of that change have reached us on this side of the water. "The UK is not innocent", a slogan used to reference the numerous cases where black people have died, either at the hands of the police or in equally tragic circumstances, but their families have not received justice. Belly Mujinga's family were in attendance to highlight their frustration about the inexplicable decision by the British Transport Police to take no further action in relation to the death of Belly, a railway ticket office worker, who contracted Covid-19 after being spat at while on duty.
John Boyega's speech showed that he is not just a hero on the big screen. He is a real-life hero, speaking out against systematic racism in the knowledge that this will probably affect his acting career detrimentally.
