I never appreciated how great of an actor Kurt Russell was until I watched the movie Solider. He takes a pretty by the numbers sci-fi movie and turns it into a compelling and thought provoking performance with primarily body language and facial expressions with minimal dialogue. That really opened the door to taking a closer look at his other performances and realizing how good he is.

steve conn EfLA was too big budget and studio system for Carpenter; it does have some charm though like Campbell as the Surgeon General of Beverly Hills. lol He needs to get back to basics if he ever decides to really get into directing again. He did his best work when he had a smaller budget and wasn't dealing with the studios.

John Carpenter helped Kurt Russell get out of that Disney kid phase. Even though the Elvis miniseries did well, movie execs still considered him a Disney kid. But John knew Kurt had talent and continued to hire him for other films.

I’ve always thought that Russell’s character had to be very challenging. He was like 25 at that time and he had to become the boss of a group of much older men, and make it believable. When you’re 25 it extremely hard to be dominant over men who are twice your age.
