Great information, your a highly skilled person. I have almost the exact same machine and going through the same repairs. Thanks for making the video.

Nice work! That’s a serious lathe you have, nice explanation of how things should work too. On my backhoe two washers with the tab are used, interesting to see the difference in machines.

Another great video Salam, thank you for making it. I gave a close look to my 1996 JD 310D and sure enough both tangs are broken off of the thrust washers. I measured the gap between the frame and the swing tower and it is about 0.340 in. If the thrust washers measure 0.158 then I guess there isn't too much wear. The swing tower piston rod eyes look close to the swing tower but I don't think they are being pressed downwards. I'm going to replace both washers (they are about $100 each) and check the pin when I do. I wonder why the tangs broke? My 310 was repainted and there is paint on part of the break on one of the washers, so they have been broken for a long time. May I ask what you made you pin from? Clearly from the glowing chips it must be very hard metal.

I made the pin from old elevator gear box pinion gear. I am not sure of the material but it was hard. Even harder than the original pin. For the thrust washers, I bought mine from eBay and they were less that 1/4 the price of the dealer.

@@SalamSayhood Yes, sometimes eBay has new OE parts for less. Unfortunately at this time none were for sale so I had no choice but to buy from a John Deere dealer who sells below list price (and had a free shipping offer). My new T148187 washers both measure 0.173" thick. This means my measured 0.340 gap between the swing tower and the frame indicates 0.008 of wear. Not enough to account for the closeness of the rod ends to the swing tower. Perhaps it was designed that way, favoring the top of the slot. Since both tabs were broken on my 310, regardless of wear, I'm going to replace them so subsequent wear occurs between the washers and not the frame. I was considering adding a 0.0625 thick bronze washer between the thrust washers. However, 841 Oilite (11,000 psi yield strength) large enough to make a 5" OD washer only comes in 0.125 thickness, which may be too much. I'll remeasure the gaps and see if this added thickness will work. I'm troubled as to why the tabs broke on both washers. Perhaps it wasn't greased enough by the prior owners and they siezed to each other. But if that were true, wouldn't only one tab have broken, not both? Anyway, I'm going to source and make a thin bronze washer to install between the steel washers before I begin this task. I'll let you know how it turns out.

The tabs broke because of lack of lubricant, uneven surfaces, and they are hardened so any load on them other than rotational will cause them to break. Do not use a bronze washer between the two hard washers. The bronze is soft and any abrasive material will get integrated into the bronze and will expedite the wear on the thrust washers. You can shim it with mild steel and use it between one of the thrust washers and the frame to shim it up or down. When I grease mine, I lift the boom so there is a place for the grease to fill between the two washers.

Do you have a video showing how to see if the valves are good from swinging left to right? Thanks or how to check the Velves?

I have a detailed video about rebuilding the valve for my bulldozer. The internal components are similar to the valve in this generation of john Deere backhoes. Before you work on your valve, make sure it is not linkage or bad hose or mechanical binding. The link for the valve video is: kzitem.info/news/bejne/xHdv2Y6kp6t9dH4

Good evening, the lathe is ENCO. I bought it used long time ago. I was able to use it in many projects. There are also Grizzly lathes which are very similar. I appreciate your comment and thank you for watching.

But if you're just digging on dirt you flip your outriggers pads out pull the pin and flip them upside down but the easiest one for rubber pad replacement is remove everything on that get hockey pucks countersink them with a wood bit and drill the proper hole for the bolt you need to go through to match the holes on the feet grade 8 bolts lock nuts and washers and then you have asphalt pads it is cheaper than what John Deere wants for those for rubber pads I think you need you might need 20 hockey pucks

How thick is the original thrust washer?
@SalamSayhood
2 жыл бұрын
The new original thrust washer is 5/32" or 0.156 inch or about 4mm. Please note the John Deere service manual and the parts manual showed only one thrust washer is needed. After I made this video, I thought about it and I think you need two.

No sir, the carrier that swings has a notch and the stationary part has a notch too. So you should engage the part that comes at 90 degrees of the thrust washer to each notch to prevent the thrust washer from spinning. They will be installed opposite to each other. Keep in mind, that how I think they should go, I already bought another thrust washer and am going to install it soon. The John Deere manual for my machine and their parts catalog show only one thrust washer is needed. From my experience with other machines caterpillar and case. There are always two thrust washers.
