UPDATE: I did as of 7/09/2022 Source and buy a used good 18HP Onan engine which actually has the pressurized oiling system and will be an upgrade from the 17HP Onan, (Exactly the same engine as far as I can tell just oil pressure vs oil bath) I will be recording a video of me getting that engine running and installed in the 317 hopefully in the next few weeks.

I paid $2500 for a series2 in 2008. Can't find them now. If the motor gets too hot it could be bad?

Yeah as of today the mower is still sitting in my field and the guy ACTUALLY believes he will fix it someday, I kinda told him if he does not come to pick it up by the next time I mow, it will mysteriously wind up in the back of a strangers truck heading to god-knows-where.

Just wanted to post a quick update since I had a few people ask about posting a follow-up rebuild. As of 6-7-2021 I pulled the jug off and found chunks of metal, parts of the con rod caps, and nuts and bolts shredded into oblivion in the crankcase. So as of right now, this rebuild is dead in the water. It would normally be repairable but due to unavailable parts, and the fact it damaged the crank, and camshaft beyond repair, it is not likely to continue. If the customer does however decide to swap for a donor or go aftermarket like Harbor Freight I will make a video on it!

Are you selling parts from that motor?

Those Kohler engines are notorious for that starter disengaging there’s an old cub cadet at the grandparents that does the same thing but it stalls out the battery says 12.5 so it’s probably a bad starter also those kt twins series 1 and 2 are prone to being run out of oil they are pretty much always repowered with a Kohler magnum they have pressure lubrication and they are way better

Your tractor is in amazing shape, put a seat cover on it & it’ll be good to go. The engine is trash the tractor is good, even if it had a KT-17 series 2 I wouldn’t rebuild it. Unless it has a Kohler K-series engine in it or an Onan.

As of now, the customer is saying to go ahead and try to rebuild the engine. So I am just waiting for my leg to heal up and hopefully I will remember to make a video on the rebuild process!

I have both the 682 & 1710 Cub Cadet tractors that have that very same engine and I have to say that those engines do produce a lot of heat compared to some of the other engines that I have ran over the years. The 682 has a fuel float issue from late last fall and the 1710 has a wiring harness issue that I am trying to figure out. Both of my engines are Series 2 engines.

What did they decide to do?

Right now the guy still has it parked in my yard, I have found him 4 separate motors that would be good donors, but he refuses to spend more than $150 on a motor, which I told him is unrealistic for an Onan and he needs to expect to pay$350 or more. Unfortunately, I think it's going to be one of those things that just rots into the ground. I would buy it myself and fix it and sell it, but he also wants blood money as if it is a 318 and running.

@@snowace9424 He told me he paid $2,500 when it ran, and he would not take any less. I told him if it was a 318 with attachments running, Absolutley he could get $2,000-$3,000 in my area. But as it sits now it is hardly worth $400 in my opinion.
