I just ran across this video as a recent subscriber to the channel. It is of particular interest to me as I have a JD 420 at home that I have not used in several years. I can't really bring myself to sell it so this looks like a logical step. Great work on saving a true old workhorse. Anyone that ever used any of the 317 thru 430 models would most likely agree. Sad there are none of the new ones built like that anymore. Thanks for the inspiration and kick in the pants to work on mine.

Ken Nolte, no joke. This kinda helped cuz I’ve got a 82 212 that’s been sitting in our barn for 7 months because I’m 16 and I bought a truck that needs work, so it was kinda sad for me to do it but I had to park it. Then 7 months later after my truck is in good working order, I finally decided to revive it, re sealing the head/gasket, new carb I bought on amazon from “I-SAVE-TRACtORS” and fuel system-fuel lines and filters, checked the ignition timing, changed the oil, and am re-painting some of the panels now. I’m really excited to finally drive it again. You can view the progress at MikeJD60. That’s my channel I’m just on my personal account.

As far as the paint I think you'd be better off doing an automotive basecoat clearcoat black urethane paint and a Deere green basecoat clearcoat. It will hold up better and last longer for many years unlike the enamel stuff. Same with the yellow for the mower deck and wheels. That's what I'm going to do when I get my 216 john deere professionally all restored. You want to do things the right way the first time when restoring stuff like this.

Adam Engelberth, yeah so back in late August of 2017 I acquired an 82 JD212 for $250 on Craigslist bright it home cleaned the carb/fuel system, put a seat cover on the existing one ($30 Amazon), cleaned the paint up, new ignition switch, aired up the tires fresh battery, and she runs like a dream. Since I was 15 and bought a truck I had to park it becuase it needed a carb because it was running like crap and yes I did set the timing/points on it that helped but still ran like crap. So new carb, new fuel lines, new tube in one of the rear tires, new points, fresh oil change, and needed some attention on the charging system as well as a new PTO switch, new springs on the drive train, and many other things. The thing is 37 and almost 38yrs old. Most mowers never make it that far. Being that I bought a truck all the money that would be spent on the 212 went to my truck so I parked it. If you search MikeJD60 I own the Chanel I’m just on another account. But yeah the 200 series mowers are great not to big and not to small just right. Except for the wide turning radius.

Going to do a rebuild on a 318 in near future. Good video. Isn't the fit on the cam bearings a bit tight? Even on a slow turning L-head you need a bit more clearance. As a long time engine builder (auto) I like to have the cam turn freely when installed.
@Isavetractors
6 жыл бұрын
It was a little tight. Like a .001 clearance. It turns easily with the gear on but was snug going in. It shouldn't pose any problems.

Have you ever had any problems with having the clearances that tight that you had to beat in the cam and other parts? I know on bikes with out oil clearance between parts they can seize.
@Isavetractors
6 жыл бұрын
This was an unusual circumstance. Normally it doesn't lead to that. It was a tiny warp in the rear cam bearing from pressing it in. Cam turned freely and had the proper clearance afterwards with proper oil pressure. Sometimes shit happens and you just have to figure it out. If the cam didn't move freely after tapping it into place I would have had to remove and redo it however cam bearings are difficult to find. I mic'd the front cam bearing and the cam and knew my clearances were perfect. I was surprised when it was so tight but knew the rear bearing may have been squeezed by a thousandth or so when the machine shop pressed it in. Once in I confirmed it turned freely so I moved on. Oil pressure is normal and the engine has about 20 hours on it. Also don't confuse tapping with "beating". Small plastic hammers dont transfer as much energy as steel ones. That camshaft just needed a little persuasion. This video is presented for your entertainment. Don't assume you see everything that happened with this engine.
@bryce1916

I have done a few engines in my time but I have never hammered in my cam .They are not supposed to be zero tolerance .Just a thought .
