My daddy bought me a new 4020 power shift in 1967. It was a strong tractor & did a great job.

The red fuel cap tells me this tractor is gas not diesel. I have a 1966 4020 gas that is identical other than the exhaust modification. I wish some of my fields were as flat as this. I'm pretty much all side hill. Where do the whitetails hide there? :)

looking at buying my first John Deere and was wondering if people who have many years of experience with 4020's feel that syncro or powershift was more trouble free in the long run or vice versa, or doesn't matter?I've used Ford, SAME, Allis, etc. and my first tractor was a Case VAC, but oddly enough I made it this far in life never even running a Deere let alone owning one. I considered some newer stuff, but always had such good luck with the older machines I've used in the past and the prices are right. In my recent search I keep seeing 4020's in my price range and would love to hear some experienced opinions. thanks in advance

If you can' t tell that it is a diesel just by the sound of it then you don't know engines at all. LOL

What year 4020 is that? I've got a 1968 and was wondering cuz I don't have the same shifter as you
@turbodiesel4709

+Codebreaker 44 : It's most likely because your tractor has a Synchro-shift transmission, and the tractor in this video has a Power-shift transmission. Shift levers were totally different (amongst a lot of other differences). Also, based on the hydraulic controls in the left of the dash, the tractor in this video is a 1968 or older tractor. In 1969, the side console controls to the right of the operator's seat came about. Another cool thing to note is the exhaust stack and the cover over the original muffler hole in the hood. This tractor is undoubtedly equipped with an M&W turbocharger kit. AWESOME!!! (I know because I once owned such a beast myself & I'm sorry I ever sold it.)

Our two 4020's, a '64 and a '68, were both synchro-shift. I preferred the synchro-shift. One time in about 1973 when one was in the repair shop at the JD dealer during planting season Dad rented a 4020 from the dealer so we could get our field work & planting done and it was a power shift. Dad made me run it and I hated it. LOL.

Why? The powershift is likely to last longer than a synchro will if you're gonna overpower the tractor. Frankly, I'd be more inclined to take the turbo off and return it to stock versus tossing a synchro in it. If you want a "super" 4020, buy a 4320...

Actually, the hood is original. What is not original is the M&W Turbo kit, the straight pipe, the piece of sheet metal on the hood covering up where the muffler would go, and the pyrometer mounted on the dash. But yeah, who really gives a shit?

You don't know what a console tractor is and you are saying it might be marked wrong? See the 2 hydraulic outlet controls and the 3 point hitch control on the left side of the steering wheel? Only John Deere 20 series Waterloo tractors from 1964-1968 had those controls. All 20 series Waterloo tractors from 1969-1972 were console tractors. The same controls were on the right side of the seat. All 4320 tractors were console tractors, along with the 4000.

This tractor is pre-1969 because the hydraulic levers are on the dash, rather than on a console to the right side of the seat. 1969 was the first year for the console.

***** I Agree. we have several 4010-4020 tractors around our farm even with our newer and far more modern JD 74 & 78 series tractors. The smaller frame 4020's can fit into tighter places the bigger 7410 and 7810 can go to. Just as versatile as decades ago when my parents & grandparents bought them for our farm.

My dad had a 4010 and he spent his whole summer on that thing the only brake he got was Sunday. Right after the last day of school he would be on that thing until fall. We still have it to this day but it doesn't run it needs overhauled. I think he still has nightmares of it still to this day.

Depends on the ground. We ran a 4-18 White trip bottom and for the most part ours handled it well. Until we got into our really black ground, then it seemed matched just right. Syncro 8sp in 4th gear is where we ran ours. Always wondered about the power shift model. Ours had side mounted controls, built in '72, just wish it had a gear ratio in-between 4th and 5th. Still have a '67 3020 diesel. Best series John Deere ever made!

If you tried to plow the whole field by yourself, you're tractor would need a complete overhaul by the time you were done. LOL What a field! We have some pretty big ones here in Indiana, mainly north of Indianapolis where it's flat and open, but none that come close to that.
