We have a 425 with a 54” and the only thing that happens is the belt slips, but that’s because of the shear amount of grass that gets under the pulleys so. After cleaning it out it never fails

These 60 inch decks are some of the best cutting decks John Deere made for GT's in my opinion. I do think that properly cared for and maintained 425 will power a 60 inch deck fine. However, at this point in time, the last 425 rolled off the assembly line almost 20 years ago, most 425's are older and have less than the 20 hp that was spec'ed and the decks rarely have new bearings etc.

My 425 can mow 12" grass with the mower going as fast as it can go. My body won't take it. I have no shield on the deck. The motor I rebuilt 2 seasons ago so it is fresh and strong. the bottom of the deck is painted with gray POR-15, (also the top under the shields) I engage the deck just above idle and tweak the choke as I do this. Once it is fully warmed up i don't use any choke.

My 1998 425 has just over 1300hrs on it and has no trouble with running the 60" deck and a kubota power bagger I run on the rear PTO at the same time. Bump the choke up just a touch and will get it going without much fuss when cold.

I have a 95 425 aws that began life with a 54" deck. When that deck needed rebuilding i decided to buy a 60". Basically the same set up as shown here. I have found that it only stalls when the temp is below 60 degees here in MN. Usually i can start it up drive out onto the grass and go. It will pull the motor down a bit but doesnt seem to have problems keeping up while mowing. It will pull in thick heavy grass when cutting 6 or more inches. (All clay soil, so have to wait for it to dry to mow.) Below 60 degrees what works for me is to feather the choke and it starts right up. And this only happens during the inital start up not at any other time and only with the mower deck. 47 snow blower and 60 broom have no problems at any temp. I need to find a good frame to make a template of the front hitch mount as mine is worn and needs to be filled in with weld. Deere says they have no such template but could locate a new frame. Lol Thanks for the videos.

I'm sure temperature has a lot to do with the deck start up. Coming up I will have a comparison of the 420 vs 425 on deck start up. These 60 decks (despite their size) are some of the best cutting decks Deere has made. Drop me an email and depending where you are at in MN I might be able to help with the front frame.

This made me hook my Tac up to my 445. Full throttle rpm 3530-3540. Engaging 60 inch deck with power flow drops to around 2990 rpm average and recovers to 3380 rpm after about a second a and doesn’t shift more than 60 rpm while mowing under normal conditions. Driving fast will drag the rpm a bit more. My tack is electronic and has a slight lag, but I’m pretty confident in my results. Very strong deck. I’ve never overwhelmed the deck but I have made the power flow choke and cough picking up leaves before.

I think if it was in the middle of summer the 425 would have near the problem it did in this video. The extra 2 hp in a 445 makes a huge difference in start up of items like decks where there is a lot of mass to start moving. The deck in this case spins nicely. In fact probably one of the smoother decks I've had in a few years.

Starting a deck, mowing with a deck, and deck capacity are three very different things. Starting a deck from a stop will generally take more horsepower and torque than running a deck. Newton's first law of motion is a great way to think about it. Deck capacity while being somewhat influenced by horsepower is also limited by deck design (air flow) and depth (material suspended in the air). The 60" deck design, while great for a finish cut does not have the volume/capacity to cut excessively long material at any type of speed. Between the limited deck height and the single material exit it is hard for these decks to process more than 3-4 inches of cut material in one pass. Yes, it will cut taller material, will it do it efficiently, no. This applies to both machines in this video not just the 425.

I would expect a 445 to power a deck much easier than a 425. In many cases I would also expect any 445 to out perform a 420. The 425 is just a shade under powered IMO when compared to any of the other two 4-5 or the 420/430.

I put a John Deere cat. 1 three point on my 1997 445. John Deere had just came out with it when I bought my tractor used in early 2000,s. The only thing I had to modify was drilling and tapping a screw that goes through left side of frame. It was easier to install than the one I just put on my new 7 series because I did not have to relocate the hydraulic cylinder on the 445. Dealer I bought it from felt Deere did not say it would fit because tractor was not designed for it. I used mine for 16 or 17 years with no issues. My coring aerator probably weighs 350 # tractor handled it like a champ, with 4 44# weights on nose. Took a agrifab pull type aerator and converted it to 3 pt. Made it fun to aerate 😃

Without direct experience, the 22 hp 445 seems to overcome the mass pretty easy. The drivetrain for the front mounts is a little different. So I can't say with direct certainty there is a change between the two, but I would say both can handle a 60" deck pretty well.
