I have the exact same 445. Save yourself a HUGE amount of grief. When disconnecting or reattaching the PTO, I take the left, rear tire off and do it then. Yes, it takes about 3 minutes to take the tire off but saves an immense amount of grief. Lots of room to work, lube what needs to be done, etc. The first time I tried this I was swearing so much, my wife made me go to church and light a candle-she thought I was going directly to hell. Try that method, it really makes things easier.

I take off both rear wheels, makes deck removal and dis connecting &. Re connecting pto shaft easier. Wish the axles had flanges for the wheel center and studs and lug nuts rather than the JD wheel nuts.

I put a couple of 2x6's under the rear tires, back the tractor up on them and then I'm able to crawl under the rear of the tractor and put the driveshaft on by opening/moving the collar and it slides right on as long as you have it all greased up. Hope this helps somebody.

That’s good advice, thank you. Someone else had commented in the thread about putting it on from the back and I’ve been doing that ever since and it’s worked great but those two by sixes would help with a little more clearance for sure.

Thanks, I enjoyed watching it. I have had a 318 for 20 plus years and just in recent years, started leaving the covers off over the belts on the deck. When they were on, I was only checking the belts once per year (Wintertime) and found grass solidly packed in there which can not be good and produces heat. There is a safety factor to leaving them off, of course, but I have no children around so think that on balance, it is better for me. So easy to remove debris. Do you leave yours off for a similar reason?
@TNYankee2020

Thanks for the nice comments, glad you enjoyed it. Yes I haven't had my guards on for years for that exact reason of packed grass, even if the belt broke I don't think it would fly out and I also don't have small children in the yard.

I live in Western KY. Just outside Paducah, KY. My name is John. I have a 425 with 2 wheel steering. The u joint for the deck come apart and did some damage to my transaxle. Now it leaks Fluid. I'm in need of a good used transaxle and was wondering if you know of any in your area? I have checked all around my area with no luck. I found 3 or4 on ebay but to far away and they didn't ship. All help would be very appreciated. THANK YOU !!!!

When ever I use a floor jack under the front axle or rear axle,. lock the front axle on both sides with vice grips so the front axle can not pivot and the chassis rolls over. Great tip on straw holes on deck height adjustment knob, will give that a try.

I'm needing to change a belt on a 455 and this gets me pretty far along with that since I will need to remove the deck. Will I have to remove that assembly that connects to the shaft to get the belt on?
@TNYankee2020
2 жыл бұрын
No, the only thing you would have to do is remove any guards that exist, you can see that I don't have mine on and then there should be an idler pulley with a spring, you will push on that to relieve belt tension, just make sure to make a drawing of your belt before you take it off it's easy to forget the pattern once you have the belt off.

I am new to John Deere maintenance but trying to do my own on a JD 425. What setting do you leave the black gauge at that you had to spray silicone on to free
@TNYankee2020
2 жыл бұрын
No hard and fast rule Diane, it's a micro adjustment 1 full turn equals 1/2" up or down. The mower will never go lower than wherever this is set. So it's nice whereas you can just raise or lower your hydraulic lever all the way down and be and be at the same spot every time, then make your micro adjustment with knob. It can be tricky to get where you want initially. Are you on Facebook group John Deere 425 445 455 Garden Tractors? If not you should join lots of knowledge. Thanks for watching.

boy you really struggled with that. i have the AWS445 and i drop the front draft arm and slide my jack under the front weight bar and hoist it up rather than play with the tractor wheels. never thought about screwing in the deck arms, i don't have nearly half the problems you do. still like the 140H3 design better it only takes about a minute and a half to put on the snow blower, mower, deck rear tiller. the belly blade is only 30 seconds. tiller is my favorite to hook up and unhook. 4x4 block under the mount plate makes it go perfectly even to backing right in.
