Finding out one has something in common with a musical superstar can be surprising...and rewarding. It turns out that John Fogerty and I share a role model: Rick Nelson. In 1987, John was kind enough to give an interview for my radio special, "Remembering Ricky -- The Music and Memories of Rick Nelson." The interview was arranged through John's brother Bob. In it, John recalls the impact that Rick had on his young years, and the friendship that grew between the two. He also talks about Bobby Neal, Patrick Woodward, Andy Chapin, and Ricky Intveld, who made up Rick's final band. (I mistakenly refer to that band as The Stone Canyon Band. Rick had stopped using that name by then.)
I sound a bit rushed toward the end of the interview, because Bob Fogerty had told me the interview could only be 20 minutes. But John, who never rushed me nor said anything about time, talked for almost a half-hour. He was so very gracious during our conversation. I always be grateful to he and Bob for making his invaluable contribution possible. It ended up to be two guys talking about an artist for whom they shared a great affection and regard. A great experience for me and, hopefully, for the listeners, as well.
