I remember watching the re-entry on TV, and listening to the Shepard flight on the radio. The Mercury Astronauts were the best of the best!

I saw a picture of John H Glenn in his Marine Corps dress blues complete with Sam Brown Belt he was a Major at the time of the picture and just before he was selected to become an astronaut. I was about ten years old at the time that picture got me interested in two things the first one I was bound and determined to be a Marine! The second and not so important as the first was to become a astronaut! I served in the United States Marine Corps from October 1973 - October 1993. Col. John H Glenn inspired me to do the very best I could. I honorably served my country as a US Marine. Thank you sir for your inspiration and Espri de Corps Semper Fidelis GySgt Retired Partlow Virginia

Houston? We've had a problem, Gen Be. The fact that Mission Control was still at the Cape in Florida shows how well you know what you're talking about. The lights were sunlight being refracted by moisture particles clinging to the rear and sides of the Friendship 7, which were flung off as the spacecraft changed position.

@@brianarbenz1329 Question: you know how people say 'We can put a man on the moon but we can't do this' or 'We can put a man on the moon but we can't do that'? What did they say BEFORE we put a man on the moon?

@@57highland My parents' generation would be able to answer that better than I. I suppose it was, "We can fly on jets from Paris to New York." Or, "We can send telegrams across the country in seconds."

@@brianarbenz1329 Thanks for your response, Brian. That was just a bit of a joke, one I saw (and heard) on SNL back in the early 80s. Tim Kazurinsky played this holy man/wise man from some Eastern religion who pondered various "profound" questions, and that was one of them. Sorry for such a dubious joke on such a serious topic. And, yes, I do remember Senator Glenn's misfortune as one of the "Keating Six" senators back in the 80s. I believe that John McCain was another. I think the others were Riegel, Cranston, DeConcini, and I forget the 6th one. Quite embarrassing for men of Glenn's and McCain's stature and reputations. (There were only five. I just googled it.)
