Released as a single in May, 1971. With James Taylor, Carly Simon and Carole King all having hits at the time, it was thought singer-songwriter John Hartford could get airplay. It didn't happen but he remained a respected lyricist and musician.

more background- this was produced by Bill Traut and Stu Phillips for the movie Jud. John is backed up by Mason Proffit- teenagers John Michael Talbot finger picking pedal steel and Tim Ayers on bass. Band leader Terry Talbot on acoustic and vocal harmony. Therefore, probably Art Nash on drums. John doesn't seem to play a lick, actually.....

Jud was produced by Igo Kantor, who was simultaneously working on Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, which is probably how Stu Phillips came to be involved with Jud.

For 1971 Hartford, this is really strange, since that is when he released the Aereoplain album. This song has the slick production of his first few albums. Also, it's strange to hear him covering a Bob Dylan song, since he basically sang his own tunes, along with occasional ones from decades before.

Jerry Jeff Walker does this song. He slows it way down and makes it sad.

Hmm. I thought everything was released when his RCA recordings were reissued from that British company.
