Several minutes into the Yoko part, my cats were clearly disturbed. Their hair was practically standing on end! They were starting to cry and began scratching at the door to get out! Seems like Clappers is who is holding it together at the beginning. He knew Lennon was literally throwing up from nerves because he'd never performed in front of such an audience without the Beatles nor even with them for two or three years and had put this band together at the very last minute. That took a certain kind of courage regardless of the musical quality that resulted from it. All a bit academic for me as Little Richard plays them all off the stage imho.

Broadly speaking, I think that John's work with Yoko and the Plastic Ono Band was the second of the two great contributions he made to popular music. With the Beatles, he moved the music forward with the injection of psychedelia. With Yoko, he advanced the form by giving rather avant-garde, experimental electric music a far wider audience than it would ever have gotten in the underground. This influenced a lot of the music that came in the wake of punk. Bands like Sonic Youth were explicitly inspired by John & Yoko's music. Having the two of them close this show of rock n roll innovators probably seems more fitting now than it might have at the time.

It's awesome seeing Lennon debut a work in progress live on stage. (Yoko is holding up the lyrics for him.) That must have been a joy for him to experience! Seriously, when was the last time John felt that thrill, 1960 in Hamburg?

Context. After 1966, one of the few, if not the only live concert Lennon performed was the Rooftop Gig for "Let It Be". Maybe you can count the "Dirty Mac" thing for Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus? He makes a couple of phone calls, "Hey, Let's fly to the Peace Gig in Toronto!" and rounds up White, Clapton and Voormann and they rehearse, without amps, on the flight to Canada. They motor to the gig and plug in after Lennon hurls because he's terrified of live performances and they do this... Yeah, not so polished but what an ordeal!

He left the Beatles for this? Rock and roll was at his heart, but heroin for sure didn't do him any favors. And Yoko Ono replacing Paul McCartney at the side of Lennon has got to be one of the most sad and unfortunate transitions to ever befall rock music.
