After being dismissed by the Beatles, Pete Best apparently formed another band and shortly after issued an album called 'Best of the Beatles'. It sold well initially because Beatles fans mistakenly thought it was a Beatles greatest hits compilation when it contained no Beatles songs at all. 'Best' of the Beatles meaning of course Pete Best himself. Legally he could issue an album with that title since his last name was Best but he was sure being an opportunist.

Janet Sampson, I agree that Pete's version of Love Me Do is not very good. It sounds like he is banging on trash-can lids! Still, in Pete's defense, that version was not finished, and none of the Beatles played particularly well on it. Pete Best was asked about the 'changing' tempo of his version in an interview, and he stated, "That was how it was performed 'live' at that time". This may explain your "all over the place" comment. John Lennon loved the song "Hey Baby" by Bruce Channel. The Beatles initially tried to emulate a similar beat. Listen to "Hey Baby" it changes tempo mid-way through.

The Truth: Look, I’ve been playing guitar and bass since 1965. I’ve played live thousands of times across America for five decades. I’ve produced around 30 albums and many singles. I’ve heard Pete Best on recordings made in studios and live. During his time with the Beatles he was adequate. Being a Beatles fan since 1964, I gather that Pete had fans and many liked him in the early years. Let’s remember, both, The sessions done in Germany and the session which was in reality the Beatles audition at E MI, both produced problems with Pete Best’s drumming. You can understand how much John and Paul wanted to have their musical career. They were together since 1958. And by 1962 this was the only record label that would hear them. George Martin has been open about the fact that their drummer, Pete best, would not be used by him to play with the Beatles in the studio. We all know he didn’t give Pete best the acts. He simply let Brian Epstein John, Paul, and George know this. John and Paul made the decision that their band was not going to be like others, where you have studio musicians playing on your records and then you go on stage and play. They wanted to write their own songs, and they wanted to play them. You can understand this because they were buddy holly fans and this is what buddy holly in the crickets did! And Holly was very respected in England, and had a string of hits prior to his death and following for a number of years! So you can understand why they took what was said to them and realize that their only decision that they were basically being forced to replace Pete best. This was not their intention. They made their demo recordings with Pete best playing drums! They took him to AMI to play as part of the band! Clearly they had no intention of getting rid of him. You could say they were loyal to a drummer who they knew wasn’t really adequate for what they wanted to do. So I would say in actuality, they stuck by him until the last minute. The Beatles are on record saying that they wanted to get the best drummer in Liverpool and everyone knew that that was Ringo Starr. That’s the only reason why they got Ringo. They knew him and they knew he was known as a great drummer. And throughout the years the Beatles have said how the minute they started playing with Ringo they realized that this really completed their sound. And they have described how Ringo played and what he did specifically which improved their sound. Any fan who is familiar with playing music and especially if you have some familiarity with recording, should listen to the sessions recorded in Germany, and the surviving recordings from in EMI of Pete playing with the Beatles. They should listen to the technicians in both studios talking about those sessions specifically in regard to Pete best. It said that Pete never worked to improve his playing. But when you hear him play over the past 30 years at events, he’s often playing songs that the Beatles recorded early on and the songs they recorded in Germany. And his playing is far better than it was then. So he did improve. My understanding is that Pete best suit the Beatles and that lawsuit wasn’t wrapped up until around the time the Beatles were breaking up. That being the case, we realized that the Beatles didn’t want to comment on Pete best because of that situation. That actually hurt Pete best because the story went that he just wasn’t a good drummer at all. Also I can’t remember the name of the group but Brian Epstein put Pete best in as a drummer in one of his groups that he managed. But supposedly Pete quit that job. He shouldn’t have. He should’ve stayed playing for any one of the groups the Epstein had because most of them had hit records! Most of them ended up on television and playing in the United States! He could’ve been a favorite drummer during the British invasion. If he had done that. And he could say yeah are used to be in the Beatles, too!

Jimmy - Lennon's reference to being cowards relates to them leaving it to Epstein to tell Best he'd been sacked. Despite all the time he'd spent with them they never spoke again. A more relevant quote from Lennon was that the Beatles were the biggest bastards in the business. I think all three felt tremendous guilt at having used Best in the manner that they did, but it was either dump him or have no chance at the success they all craved. Lennon's insensitivity was his method of handling emotional pain. McCartney's was to put on blinkered optimism. Harrison never spoke at all about it - that's how he handled stress when he was younger.

John Lennon's comments about anything have to be cross referenced for consistency. There are various versions on his views on Pete Best, George Harrison, Ringo Star and Paul McCartney. They differ depending on his mood that day or hour. Its sad that he could be so callous in public and then turn around and praise the same person. It's not honesty but more of a lack of boundaries from himself. It's got nothing to do with talent but allot with personal boundaries.
@LennyJohnson5

Spot on; Lennon was the least detail-conscious person in the Beatles... he couldn't even recall whether Brian Epstein died before or after they recorded Sgt Pepper.... having attended the Sgt Pepper launch party.... at Epstein's house! Loved Lennon to bits, but one thing he fails to reference is that he was very close to Pete when they were in Hamburg; it was really George and Paul who pushed through the sacking and John remained very embarrassed by the way it was done, even referencing it in interviews shortly before his death. Pete's family even loaned him the authentic military medals he's wearing on the Sgt Pepper cover. John's insecure personality often revealed itself in unnecessarily aggressive behaviour.

Fordham1969, Good point. I have always believed that the Beatles were jealous of Pete....to a point. There is a famous story of Pete receiving a giant teddy-bear from a group of female fans....these fans had nothing for the other three. Another story about Pete receiving a laceration from a female fan trying to cut a piece of his jacket as a souvenir. And, the most famous story of Paul's father chastising Pete for upstaging the other three. All these stories are documented. How could young men in their late teens to early 20's not be a little jealous? John and Paul were the two main reasons the band was emerging as the greatest band Great Britain had ever seen, but their drummer is getting all that attention? Regardless, I believe that people are not jealous of their friends. Pete never had a strong friendship with Paul or George. Pete's lack of true friendship with the band, and limited ability on drums sealed his fate with the band.

Sure, he wasn’t a drummer on Ringo’s level, he was the most popular Beatle (cavern era), and he didn’t share the same sense of humor as the others, but this was a guy who had gone through all the shit, the toughest part of their development, he was an integral part of the band, and they just told Brian to get rid of him. Cold blooded. Also, I’ve heard that none of the Beatles even went to Stu’s funeral. John admired Stu and loved him, but just couldn’t deal with being at the funeral. It seemed like John was finally getting past his violent and crass temperament after Sean was born. Which makes his murder even more tragic.

A lot of people just say Pete was sacked and they were so mean to him. Sure, things could have been handled differently. But at the time there was a very legit reason to believe that had they not gotten rid of Pete, they would have lost their record deal. George Martin was not happy with the drumming and hired a session drummer to record the next studio session after Pete had done so poorly recording. By the time they went back into record, they had replaced Pete with Ringo. At the time Ringo’s playing was not up to par with recording and Martin wasn’t fooling around. He’d hired an expensive drummer and he intended to use the professional. Ringo’s figured out playing to record, it’s very doubtful that Pete would ever be good enough.

Lennon was quite blunt from interviews i've heard over 40 years as a Beatles fan. In this interview he plays down Pete Best and the contribution he made. If he was that crap why did they let him audition for Decca and EMI. I suspect if George Martin had not expressed concerns over Pete Best they would have kept him in order to secure that record deal. None of the band members were the finished article. John Lennon always had his voice over-dubbed or whatever the term was as he did'nt like his singing voice. Mc Cartney just would prefer to airbrush Pete Best completely from the Bands history.

When the Beatles went to Hamburg in 1960 they didn't have a great deal going for them, but what they had they built on and Pete was learning as they all did by doing, all the long play sets day after day, I listen to those very early recordings and Pete is just as good as the rest of the band! ... Later when George Martin said they needed a studio drummer, they panicked and kicked Pete out, brought Ringo in and he was replaced by a session musician on love me do and P.S. I love you, As John said in the early 70s they were cowards, Brian had to do the dirty work and sack him and the beatles ended up settling lawsuits brought by Pete and his mom Mona, Pete Best was and always will be the original Beatles drummer, Ringo was his replacement, The Beatles went on to great things and Pete got on with his life and eventually back into music full time in 1988, He has toured the world with the Pete Best band and written books on his years with john,Paul & George. Ringo is a Starr now in his own band and as Pete said just the other day in the press .. there are no hard feelings, time moves on, So Pete Best ... Lennon also said The Beatles were at their best during Pete's two years as their drummer. He went on to say that once they started recording they fell apart as a live band. John was clearly lying when he said Pete was lousy. If he was lousy he wouldn't have lasted two weeks with the band. No, when Pete joined The Beatles they were the worst band in Liverpool. Pete joined, they went off to Hamburg, Pete invented the "Atom Beat" to be heard over the raucous German crowds, and it was that thunderous beat that *defined* The Beatles sound, and elevated them to the top of all the bands in Hamburg and Liverpool, propelling them all the way to their record contract with EMI (Abbey Road). John, Paul and George betrayed Pete because they were jealous of his immense popularity with the fans and press. Disgusting.

Even The Rolling Stones kept keyboard player Ian Stuart in the background.

I tend to believe this along with what George Marten had to say and my own ears. Pete just wasn't a very good drummer. They certainly gave him a fair chance but as John says, he never improved. John, Paul, and George were getting better all the time but Pete was still just plodding along. I think its very plausible that it wasn't until they were signed and ready to record their first single that they had something better to offer Ringo. The Beatles had only recently been voted top band in Liverpool over Ringo's band, Rory Storm And The Hurricanes, and were the first to get signed to make a record. Ringo has said he had a good thing going and was reluctant to join but that John's and Paul's confidence and belief that it was going to be successful convinced him.

All of these vlogs about Pete Best always miss one thing. All of the time Pete spent drumming for the others, were they not getting valuable practice and honing their skill? From what I've heard the Beatles were not overnight sensations. I believe the reason for their massive success was the mind numbing work they put into it. There are no short cuts to greatness. Pete should get more credit for the Beatles success. It could be we would have never heard of them if Pete hadn't been pounding on the skins. They may have given up several feet from the summit. Thanks Pete for doing your part then passing the baton to Rick Starkey.

I’m assuming anyone who has opinion about Pete Best would most likely be a musician so I ask you this: after hearing the many recordings of the early Beatles with the ironically named Pete Best, would you want him circa 1962 to be in your band? I have asked this question over the decades and almost every musician asked says no; listen to Mr. Lennon here, Pete Best was a crap drummer...hey, he may have been a really nice guy & he certainly was a handsome fella but he was NOT a good drummer; a good time keeper...Ringo joining the Beatles is not some mysterious thing...just like The Stones & Charlie Watts, John, Paul, & George finally got the drummer they deserved when they could afford the best Rock drummer in their hometown at that time; I am a multi instrumentalist in my 60s and have played in more bands than I can remember and, as every good musician will tell you, it’s really hard to find good drummers; I even played drums in a Beatle band; if any cocky drummer gives me sh!t about Ringo not being a great drummer I tell them to sit behind the kit and play She’s A Woman or Please Please Me...or Rain...but I digress

Lennon was just very nasty here about Pete Best. If they were going to kick him out why did they do the Decca Auditions with him and the initial Sessions at EMI ? They were essentially signed to Record. Sounds like they were leaving it pretty late to sack him if that was their plan. George Martin didn't want them to sack Pete but he wanted Andy White on the "Love Me Do "track. The Beatles brought Ringo in but George Martin didn't think he was good enough for the Track either. That's historical fact . Check out Ringo been interviewed years later I believe on Anthology. The ultimate Childishness came in Anthology when they cut Pete's face from an early photo and put Ringo's face in .

I'm a big Lennon fan, and often admired his honesty, but this was unnecessarily brutal and cruel. Pete Best's life was ruined by that one act - and Ringo is a better drummer, undoubtedly - and John should have eased off. I'm pleased Pete finally got some financial security when the Anthology came out, because no-one in the Beatles entourage seemed to think of helping him out before that. Peace and love isn't a one-way street.....

Ted Wilson I get that Ted, but Pete was no worse than most ‘pop’ drummers of that era, and had been important in getting them noticed. John would have known Pete’s history of depression and attempted suicide, so I found this comment unnecessarily spiteful. There is no excuse for cruelty, especially when Pete has no power to reply. I love John Lennon - the man and his body of work - but he was a complex guy and sometimes his mouth by-passed both his brain and his conscience.

@Ted Wilson You're naive Ted, and quite unpleasantly opinionated... how did we get to hear about the Second World War, or even the Napolenic War....?? When an interview is recorded, by tape or written word, there is no controlling where it goes. John was media-savvy (unlike you) and knew there was a fair chance his interview would end up in a magazine, newspaper or on the radio. So please.... don't be so bloody stupid. Pete Best was as good as most 'pop' band drummers - this doesn't mean he was a good drummer. 'Pop' music was ephemeral; the Beatles didn't expect to last more than a few years at the top, and there are many reports from musicians in Hamburg (of which you aren't one) who state both Pete and Stu were better musicians than history would have you believe. Ringo is a great drummer.... the Beatles' music wouldn't be nearly as unique without him, but Pete was adequate. You have a closed mind and great faith in your biased opinion - please answer this if you wish, but I won't be reading it. Modern life is unpleasant enough without opinionated fools like you adding to it. I bet you have no friends. Bye bye x

Immediate after Ringo, very gently burst in with his kit he got the band a boost that turned the 3 cool cats into a 4 piece rock’n roll band. I mean a band in leather suits playing skiffle or a band in suits playing rock’n roll. The second alternative sounds mor tempting to me. As it actually did for a whole world. I remember back in 1963 when got PPM there was nothing a like. Elvis left the building in a flick of an eye. -Tight vocals. Crisp guitars. A heavy backbeat.
