The chord progression he plays over "I've got dreams" is pretty close to: G - Am - and now your 3 chords - Bm (maybe Bm7) - C - D7(4) D7(4) = (10, x, 10, 11, 8, x) (from the top string). A really cool sounding chord with the clashing 3rd and 4th in the top. Works pretty well all over the fretboard. Use your thumb for the top string with all the chords in the progression - it really is a very usable way to do chords which I use for most chords. Hope it works for you :-)

There's more to being an amazing artist than just being an virtuoso guitarist, a great vocalist or a superb songwriter. You have to be able to put it all together into something that works and John Mayer does that. Everyone bitches about how there are so many better guitarists out there than John Mayer, but just because you're a great guitarist, it doesn't mean you're guaranteed stardom.
