I think this is wonderful, not because "Mayer is better" than Sinatra, but simply because I see it as him playing homage to one of the great singers of all times. Furthermore, by playing this he may introduce a bunch of people to Sinatra who never would have listened to him. I think both versions are wonderful. Although in Sinatra's case he went into the studio right after he got dumped by his girl at the time, so he was heartsick and I think you can hear it.

When Bottii plays this song with anyone (see sting), it becomes a battle of how soft everyone can perform... I miss the way Sinatra still belted away at a few of these lines. Somethings lost. Still gorgeous, but Sinatra will always own this one.

Very nice effort. By no means my favorite version of this song but the musicianship is top notch. More than anything I'm very impressed with Mayer's developing depth and breadth as a musician. He's very subtly introduced Ray Charles, Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding and now the great Frank Sinatra into his repertoire. He's reintroducing standards of American pop music to listeners that would have never discovered them on their own. Bravo Mr. Mayer!

Better than I expected... The interlude for solos was musically thrilling, and had absolutely nothing, whatever, to do with the tune. If Mayer's flavor-of-the-month celebrity (from my superannuated perspective) introduces a new generation to this great tune, God bless him. **The Django Riders John Mayer is faaaar from Flavor Of The Month. Maybe back when he was doing "Body Is A Wonderland" that could be said, but this dude will go down as a legend. Probably the greatest blues guitar player of this generation. ***** No offense... ...but I've heard it all before. **The Django Riders I'm confused, so is it that you refuse to listen to him? It's not just me saying this John has been praised by just about every legendary blues guitarist you can name. Eric Clapton and BB King have both said he is the future of blues music. If you haven't heard his John Mayer Trio album then your really missing out, because it's some of the finest playing you will ever hear. The man is just ridiculous . @@The Django Riders If I've stepped on your toes, I apologize. There's a limited musical vocabulary for a soloist in this idiom, and I've heard it all before... as I said before, I'm superannuated... ...and I've been listening to this stuff for an awfully long time. (Also, I believe he's a bit of a kiss-and-tell guy, and I choose not to listen to such a cur, no matter how accomplished he is.) **The Django Riders No not at all, I was just wondering if you had actually listened to him. To each their own my friend. **Pascal Suski you now over years i have learned that jazz is someting more than playing hip stuff over chords its internal expression combined with the rhytm, its a beutifull version accessible for jazz musicins as well for others **Pascal Suski 6 months ago this is a real musician comment @@Pascal Suski What is? **Ian Mitchell +tuxguys I can see where you're coming from on the superannuation thing. Mayer doesn't really do anything new- what he does is make new combinations of old things, and he does that very well, but no one would accuse him of being a revolutionary. However, I have to disagree with you elsewhere. Anyone who's done research will know that Mayer's public persona is a gross distortion of his actual views and activities. Such is the case with anyone who spends a disproportionate amount of time under heavy media scrutiny- but more importantly, it doesn't matter. His being a bit of a womanizer does not qualify or preclude his musical talents, and it's hypocritical to say otherwise. All the guys in Basie's band were strung out on opium, and what about all the crazy shit that Clapton's done that we've forgiven him for? Maybe you've just got rose-colored glasses on, but eliminating anyone with a lifestyle we find distasteful from the talent pool leaves us with not much of a pool at all. Ultimately, you've either got to rule out all artists' personal lives, or hold them all to the same exacting standards. You can't have it both ways. @@Ian Mitchell Read my comment again: I don't care that he plays around, more power to him; I think that he's a louse because he talks about what he's done, and with whom. (A Gentleman never asks, and a Gentleman never tells.) **Ian Mitchell 1 month ago Something a gentleman does do is know what he's talking about before passing judgement. As I said before, a person of Mayer's celebrity is bound to have their every move dissected and read into by the press. Have you met the man? I have, and it's important to remember that you can't trust everything (or anything) that you read in a tabloid. @@Ian Mitchell Sage advice. I don't read tabloids.
