The concerts he played recently are great. Like Barclay's 2013 listen to that.. Internet archive.. The ones he played before are also great. John Mayer is a great live musician meaning not only does he improvise.. He doesn't play the same songs year after year.. Those people that want him to play the second set of where the light is at every concert.. That's what the Blu-ray is for. After reading so many comments on John Mayer recordings.. I want to coin a new term.. Bluesholes.. Guys that think anything that is not all blues all the time is crap.. And they also seem to think Mayer is not so good at the blues but I really don't understand that. Sounds good to me. Maybe it's not harsh enough to be considered real blues but I like it.

***** sorry to burst your bubble, but if you believe everything you hear on a released live album then that's quite terrible. Don't get me wrong, I love John Mayer he's brilliant and I will always be an avid fan, but I've been to a lot of live shows where the event is recorded and then released as a dvd or audio cd. You'd be surprised at the amount producers and sound-guys can manipulate. That's why every live album sounds so perfect, it's because it is live but has still been manipulated and tweaked to be perfect. EVERYTHING is miked up, so it's just one live recording of an album. An example is when I saw Alter Bridge live at Wembley and Myles Kennedy hit a wrong note and Mark Termonti fucked up a solo, wasn't too noticeable to the untrained ear, but it was to me and a few mates, but when the DVD was released, it was fixed. Again don't get me wrong, LA is an amazing show but it is still compressed and manipulated to the point it might as well as be an album with an audience.

Talking doesn't require as much air support as singing. I meant that his SINGING voice is deeper now. Compare Room for Squares with Paradise Valley. His voice has gotten heavier from the operation and I think he's working with that change nicely. But I still have faith in him getting his range back. He's gone a long way since the operation, and it can't be easy at all, especially when he's still touring and playing concerts frequently.

My theory about John Mayer is his heart is in the blues, you can tell that right down from the tone of his guitar every live show. But he doesn't want to limit himself and likes to see where he can grow in other areas. This is why his album's genres have gone from (starting from first to last album) pop, rock, blues, back to pop-rock, folk, and now finally country-folk. His guitar playing alone easily places him as one of the all time greats, but sadly he'll never get that recognition because he doesn't stick to a genre like the SRVs, Claptons, EVHs, etc etc etc had, which in turn affects his tone every album and nobody can figure out if he excels or not because while i'll boast about him cause of Covered in Rain, he'll be dogged on for Your Body is a Wonderland. This warps people's opinions on him, especially guitar aficionados. Mayer will never get the respect he probably deserves because of this, which honestly makes me feel bad for the guy. But one thing is for damn sure: pop, blues, or folk, he's one of the greatest guitarists out there (I'd go as for to say the most talented among active artists). I highly recommend watching the opening track to his Where The Light Is live album ("Neon"), this is what changed my mind about his abilities.

Only morons who don't have an ability to understand the art of putting together amazing words to a beat think that John Mayer is ordinary. All the popularity he has proves he's is beyond genius. To express real every day feelings in poetry style is a real art, I know because I'm an artist myself and although I lived 59 years on this planet, I don't claim to have a fraction of the talent that young John has. Those who don't get it just need to analyze the words he puts together to create a feeling but even beyond that, he creates the mood of those words thru his music. The listener can actually feel himself in that moment. .Slow Dancing in a Burning Room is just one example of being able to visualize the fire overtaking the room as the conflicted couple slow dance to their death. Another example is "Dreaming with a Broken Heart." The most beautiful part of that song, in my opinion is at the end when he asks, "Why do I have to fall asleep with roses in my hand? It can be left to interpretation which makes a variety of visuals for whatever the listener relates to. Some can even see it as a romeo and julliet type suicide where he loved her so much that he killed himself and is laying in the coffin with roses in his hand. John Mayer is brilliant. He's nothing else.

John Mayer has by far been one of my favorite artists of this time period. He has definitely had his share of ups and downs as well. You can tell from the progression of his music that he has gone from Pop, to Jazz, to a more Folk/Country style as his tastes have evolved. It doesn't mean he is a bad artist, on the other hand it is showing he is versatile and talented enough to venture out of the comfort zone that most artists stay in. With respect to everyone throwing a fit of his tastes changing, its understandable, but no talented and smart artist is going to linger around in "The Good Ol' Days" to make good music. Yes, his "Where the Light Is" tour in LA was amazing to say the least (which I have heard too many say). But there were multiple factors you have to take into consideration when comparing albums! For instance: - He was playing in a indoor stadium that was built for acoustics. You can't compare an outdoor venue and an indoor acoustic venue for the same sound quality, any experienced musician would tell you they will never sound the same - The venue in LA was his own concert, not a festival. Festivals are unpack, plug in, test, and play. The sound tuning going into his concert in LA I guarantee was way more involved than his performance shown here. - Vocal surgery is something you don't get over immediately. His concerts usually run over an hour or so. That kind of strain on vocals can wear on a person and I don't expect someone to be on their A game after a surgery to repair a very delicate muscle. I understand how people want to judge the guy, but its easy to throw blame and judgment at people when you are sitting behind your computer. Try getting on stage and being perfect when music alone is a very delicate lady.

Lot's of old stuff. I'm assuming he realized an event like pink pop would respond better to that. Kind of a shame though, 1 song from his newest album, and 1 from the one before it. Hopefully his next album he produces some songs he feels comfortable playing at all venues, like he did with continuum and battle studies. I guess what I am saying is more Pop/Blues as opposed to Country/Americana/Folk. But I don't think that will happen :/. Love you John.

I agree. I love the band he tours with for the folk stuff, but the funk/blues stuff sounded so much better with older members. I love Aaron Paul as a drummer, but carlock and johnson were just better suited for the funk. And of course stevie:)

Nate Cordova Somewhat agree. I think Aaron Sterling does great in general and has no problem on "Don't Trust Myself" and "Slow Dancing...", but J.J. and Steve have him beat on Belief and Gravity. If JM takes a full turn away from the 70s folk-rock/country sound, I wonder how he'll manage to make his catalog sound more seamless during future live shows.

Wasn't there a rumor about a new trio album in 2015? He was in the studio with Stevie and pino. I would be really excited to see how his experiences since continuum and try has influenced his blues/funk playing. His playing right now is all about "less is more."

I was there, it was awesome. However, I agree with most of the people here that it definitely wasn't his best performance. My guess is that he was pissed off at being treated as a warmup for The Rolling Stones, who performed after Mayer. Of course, as soon as The Stones agreed on playing at Pinkpop, the became the headline of the festival, which caused Mayer being shoved aside. There were a lot of big artists on the festival. These include John Mayer, Ed Sheeran, The Rolling Stones, Stromae, Metallica and the Arctic Monkeys. The festival lasted three days, and each day had one big closing performance of a big artist. These closing performance were longer than other performances and way more fancy. The first day The Stones were the closing artist (thus deemed the most important artist that day). The second day it was The Arctic Monkeys, the third day Metallica. Mayer performed right before The Stones. He didn't serve as a closing performance for any day. He was kind of deemed a smaller artist than he really is. His performance lasted as long and was as much hyped by the festival itself as all other performances of smaller artists, while I think John Mayer is a bigger artist than The Monkeys. I think John deemed himself to good to be seen as a regular artist performing mainly as a warmup for The Stones. That might be a bit arrogant of him (which, we all know that he IS pretty arrogant), but I can definitely see why he doesn't like it. I think he's too good to be treated like that as well.

Yes I totaly agree with that, I was there too and almost everybody was there for the stones. I saw in his face he didn't like that but I didn't saw him life before so I can not say if he was better or worse than normal. But it was better for him to be the first or the second. Maybe flogging molly should be in his place and he in the place of flogging molly. But I think he was great :) I'm sorry for my grammar I am dutch and not really good in English.

Umm, I read on his fan page, one of the main reasons he actually agreed to go was because the stones were there.

He is a guitar god and isn't it boring to always be a "one trick pony"? I am born in the sixties and it is the glorious variety I appreciate with John!! And not to forget, he takes a stand! Nobody needs to strive to be everyone's darling! John, keep rocking on!!

slow dancing in a burning room, the way he ends his first solo from 47:29 til 47:33 with the 5 strums instead of an articulated lick for me is arguably the best version of it.

Agreed, I also notice that with these big bands (multiple guitar players who all do a solo at somepoint), there's usually a delay when the front of house is trying to figure out which player is soloing. Makes you wonder, do these major major acts have THEIR FOH guys on the board or is it the head FOH from the fest. Then I also find myself curious if it's just the untouched mix from the board, which for us at home leaves out the actual sound from the space. So many variables.

@KingDd

i wouldn't say he is underrated i mean he has multiple Grammy, plays at amazing concerts plays with blues legends, has had 3 electric signature model guitars 2 sig acoustics, and just finished an amazing summer playing with the Grateful Dead (Dead and Company) and based on the concerts I went to i talked to a lot of the dead heads there and at the beginning of the show they were skeptical about him and by the end they loved him. So i wouldn't say he is underrated I believe he is a pop artist.

How can anyone say "what a waste of talent?!?!" John Mayer has worked extremely hard to get where he is today. Yes, his albums do not reflect a lot of what his skills are capable of, but he has played the music business in a genius way. His early albums were tailored to the "pop" young crowd who likes that love song, your body is a wonder land acoustic stuff, Which I too am a slight fan of. Once those all sold millions of copies and made Mayer millions of dollars, he is now in a position to where he can play the music that influenced him the most, like blues! Now he is free to create projects like the John Mayer Trio and get invited to Eric Clapton's crossroads festival, play with Clapton himself, meet guitar gods like buddy guy. So before you go and start calling his music shit or he is a waste of talent, think about the talent it took to make those first albums, and think about the talent you have to have in order to catch the attention of Clapton. Music is a way of expressing emotions when there are no words.......

Steve Jordan and Pino was John's ultimate rhythm sections. But at the same time, solo records and band records are necessary to be (creative outlet) different. Only musicians understands this statement. Why would you wanna to repeat yourself over and over again when everytime you go to the studios, you have 50+ songs worth of materials. John is a bad ass.

Chinchillupa Guy Haha no. Where the light is is so much better than this concert. First of all, the acoustic set, secondly, the awesome JM Trio set with Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino.. Also, John played much better at the Nokia Theatre, fact.

Christian van Vliet Where the light is was more rehearsed and precise, I'll give you that. But this concert had more soul and was just a jam sesh. I'm not gonna dispute the trio, i totally agree, but I wouldn't say John played better. John ran through more scales no doubt, but this concert he was singing with his guitar!
