@@JonasEhmannMusic I’ll do my best. “Why you no love me” is the way his “inner-child” (to put it in jungian terms) expressed the pain of not feeling loved early on when he began dating (and “for a long time”, as he says). Conveying that sentence the way a child would express it he’s alluding to the purest manifestation of dispair: the raw, primal expression of a child feeling left alone and asking for love, as that was the way he felt at that time. As an adult he’s trying to articulate, in the language of that child, that very exact feeling, hence the “language as a second language” he’s referring to. I’m not completely sure I didn’t misread him, though, as it’s hard to “prove” that you inferred a clear explanation from the literality of a beautiful and highly evocative metaphor. But I think he meant something along those lines. Cheers.

I was fortunate to have grown up in the 80s listening to all that dynamically creative music. When i hear that stuff back now i don't really feel it in the way i heard it for the first time because the passage of time has blurred the emotions i felt in the 80's listening to it. What Mayer has done with this wonderful collection of songs with deep 80's undertones has in fact time travelled me back to that period even more than the songs from that period. It's like the 80's was in fire terms burning embers about to burn out, Mayer has come along with a load of fresh wood and gallons of fuel and got it blazing again. Man is a genius.

“When the reader doesn’t love the writer” there’s a creative part of your brain and a more logical part of your brain. They are both incredibly important in any creative endeavor. When writing or trying to spark anything new creatively, it’s best to get that logical part out of the way and just write. Let the idea have a chance to blossom before you decide to prune it. Don’t be concerned with if it’s “good” or “bad” in that moment. Be concerned if it’s honest and true. Then you can come back later and over analyze it to death as you inevitably do. If it’s time to be creative, its not time to be analytical. You’ll have more than enough time to do that later.

It already was Why You No Love Me before watching this interview, now it's definitely one of my favorites of him of all time!

Think JJ Cale singing (based on voice production treatment) with Knopfler and Lynott in the band, see King’s Call. The best track on the album.

I wish I could get the smooth guitar theme this video starts and ends with. I'd make it my ringtone so I can listen to it and never forget that this beautiful piece of rhythm exists.

I think that, together, they are breaking down and really articulating John's creative life musically. They're sort of shining a light on all the different facets of the process. I learned a lot about JM, and that's what I was hoping for. Well done and thank you for this interview! 🌟

You wanna know what's super weird about the implanting memories thing? So I was driving with my wife on our way home from vacation and we had shuffled Mayer on Spotify. The Last Train Home plays. I thought "wow, this must be a deep track that I'm just not familiar with". Turns out Mayer had just released it as a single.
