John Dittli hasn't answered so I will give it a guess. Finding skateable ice on backcountry lakes in the eastern Sierra can be tricky. A lot of cold, clear nights without a lot of snow must occur to set the lakes up with ice thick enough to skate on. Decent winter storms soon follow and cover the ice with snow and/or bumpy ice. Smooth ice occurs, on average, in the late fall prior to the heavier snow of December through April (sometimes though June). The snow around the lakes Dittle shows is usually 20 feet deep or more by the time spring comes, depending on the location. I once verified the long term (hard and compressed) snowpack in March at 30 deep. Some Sierra winters can come in strong with heavy snows in early October prior to the ice forming without precip. Back in 2010 or 2011 a lot of cold temperatures were experienced all the way to January 17th without much snow. The east entrance to Yosemite National Park remained open to that date. There were a couple or more months of smooth ice that year.

Beautiful. As an old puckster from NH, I played a lot of pond hockey back in the 60s. Nothing like a sharp edge on fast ice. All you needed was a stick and puck. How cool to pass a puck around on a surface this big.

Wow that was AMAZING!! I hiked there a few summers back, and never could have imagined it completely frozen over. Way cool!

Thank you! There were a number of things that happened there, but most significantly, a very strong wind event that broke up existing ice and piled it up in various shapes and places.

As one who used to skate rivers, ponds, and lagoons as a kid that is so cool and a bit crazzzy at same time! Well done guys. Can't wait to get down there this year.

Breathtaking beauty! I've been to Shadow, Garnet and 1000, but never in winter. I've even stayed at the same terraced campsite on the shore of Garnet that you bivouacked at.

This looks like an amazing experience. I fell in love with this place when hiking the PCT a few years ago. You've inspired me to improve my skating skills and go back and try this out some day -- totally different way to see the Sierra.

Nice video John, thanks for sharing. I'm glad people are getting out and enjoying the crazy nice weather but I sure do hope the Sierra starts getting some deep snow soon.

I love how you end with the Garnet Lake long shot. I've been there many times from the early '70s until the '80s. Never ever considered ice skating those lakes.

Fantastic, and you know what's even better, you left the original sound in! There's no better music than the scraping of ice and rocks and the wind. Thanks for not covering reality over with Euro-pop!

Soooo beautiful! I loved the cracked, upheaved ice on the lake . . . what makes it do that? And the mirror-like reflection on the mountains and sky on the frozen water near the end was absolutely magic! Loved it!
