March 13, 2020 - John Paul White at Caffè Lena
John Paul White plays his debut show at Caffè Lena, on a night that had been sold out for weeks until restrictions on entertainment venues from the State of New York due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus cut the attendance in half. The night was not lost, however, and almost 500 people from all over the world shared the night with us here at Lena's by tuning in on the live stream, turning what seemed to be a dark and uncertain time into one of the most memorable experiences this room has ever seen.
The artist: Born and raised in Muscle Shoals, Alabama John Paul White has a knack for deep soulful lyrics and complex melodies. As an artist, White’s music spans multiple genres, from rock to folk to country. It is this chameleon like quality of being able to adapt his music to multiple audiences that make him a true talent. He has cultivated his career in Nashville for two decades, first as a songwriter for a major publisher, then as half of The Civil Wars - a groundbreaking duo that won four Grammy Awards before disbanding in 2012. Because The Civil Wars were so hard to categorize, White has earned a fan base among a wide spectrum of music lovers.
Wit his newest album The Hurting Kind, John Paul White has crafted a stunning record that draws on the lush, orchestrated music made in Nashville in the early 1960s. Yet these songs retain a modern feel, whether he's writing about overwhelming love, unraveling relationships, or the fading memory of a loved one.
The venue: Caffè Lena offers extraordinary music in an intimate venue steeped in history. It has been in continuous operation longer than any other folk club in the USA. First opened in 1960 in Saratoga Springs NY, the Caffè's early years were entwined with the social movements of that era. Emerging artists such as Bob Dylan, The Freedom Singers, Arlo Guthrie, Emmylou Harris and Don McLean took their turn on the stage, alongside esteemed veterans such as Clarence Ashley, Mississippi John Hurt, Skip James and Pete Seeger. The venue has been called “An American Treasure” by the Library of Congress, and has received recognition from the GRAMMY Foundation for it’s contribution to American music.
