Thank you. Great critique. This reminds me of a conversation I once had with a Fortune 500 CEO, in which a daring iconoclast (him) devotes his life to a certain cause. He spends 30 years working his way to be CEO of the company that most opposed that cause, thinking he could change it. He got to the top spot in an industry he hated, with people he disliked ... only to discover that once there, he had no choice but to continue the status quo or else be fired the moment he did anything that affected short-term earnings negatively. He was extremely bitter about it and ultimately bought a big estate far, far away, retired, and now will have nothing to do with anyone or anything connected to his past career. Sometimes the system is constructed in ways that simply can't be changed from within, even by a swell guy who very much wants to.

Watching the show and watching Adam’s subsequent interviews, and now watching your video, it feels like he is caught in a kind of limbo. On one hand he is open-minded and intellectually honest enough to recognize that our government (& broader society) is broken, and that neoliberalism and white supremacy underly it all; On the other he can’t let go of the relative comfort of operating within the system rather than challenging it. Capitalist realism, class interests, etc. It’s easier to rationalize producing the show despite it being fundamentally compromised to the point of being propaganda. I’m glad he’s opening himself up to criticism and owning up to the flaws in the show. So many people know my province legislature as "the golden boy" (a statue on the building) and get confused when I call it the legislature (or Ledge) Like, just listing the departments and controversies with them is bringing people closer to political engagement than harping about power and economic structures ever will. "He's the president. He's in charge. He makes deals with other countries." What even is the department of energy? What does FDA stand for? Deep state = bad, my politician = good. The ideological framework Adam uses is almost a necessity for starting a conversation to begin with. Or else it just sounds like "The government don't work, Biden/Dems are bad at it." The average European actually has arguments for or against the monarchy, Americans argue whether their gov is a "republic" or "democracy" purely for the aesthetic of the word used.

As a career public servant in both Australia (perhaps the most settler colonial of settler colonial states) and the UK, it's a show I had deeply mixed feelings about. On the one hand, I've spent my working life largely working alongside Swell Guys - lots of people who really, truly care about the communities they're supposedly there to serve, believe in effective central management of the commons, and want to provide well-managed social and economic programs that can make meaningful differences in the lives of real people. Having also spent that career on the brunt of popular disdain for the very notion of working for anything other than creating profit for shareholders, there's also an appeal in being made visible in a positive light. But. I worked for a time in the Indigenous affairs department of an Australian government. Few things have been more professionally and personally soul crushing than seeing people who truly, deeply cared about Indigenous communities be shunted into boxes that didn't serve those communities' needs, and only served the needs of the state (and, courtesy of baked-in inefficiencies, barely even that). I've watched regulation and sustainability being trampled by a legislative requirement to "raise resources to their highest market value." Above all, I've seen systems make fools of a lot of well-meaning people, and watched those people either buy in our burn out. I keep working here, because I find it easier to reconcile this than to reconcile creating profit for shareholders, and a person has to eat.

My mom is a psychologist at the VA (US Dept. of veteran affairs). I felt like the show was fairly in with how she describes it. She's doing the work of at least 2 people everyday, her office is poorly managed overall, and they make her fill out referrals for people from other clinics. She's getting older and as mediocre as her benefits are, they're better than other places. Her health insurance is accepted in most places (even if they keep trying to weasel their way out of fully covering hospital stays). Most government employees are just normal people.

The dismal reality of the American political -land- hellscape is that we are conditioned from birth to view the very concept of public institutions as suspect. 'State' means nothing beyond one of the fifty administrative subdivisions. Within the US context, Adam's new show _is_ a radical critique. So thank you for this, your work is always an oasis of theory in the desert of post-ideology.
@guy-sl3kr
2 жыл бұрын
Good point, but I'd like to add that Americans are also taught to view public institutions as the shield that protects our inalienable human rights and civil liberties. We venerate our constitution like a sacred text and worship our police because they're the thin blue line protecting society from chaos, supposedly. We paradoxically hate our government _and_ think that it's appropriate to impose our government on all other countries. Because although our government sucks, it's The Only Way™. This worldview makes absolutely no sense but we Americans are not a thoughtful people.
@Sljm8D
2 жыл бұрын
Agreed, and I'd like to riff a bit about this sacred text and dichotomous hate/obedience I think the Hate of Government is a transformation of the Fear of God in an ostensibly secularized, but still effectively religious nation. Meaning, in order *to* fear God, one must also accept the legitimacy of His wrath, and His judgment. Today people do this with a State that they simultaneously mistrust but don't question the on-paper (literally) legitimacy of it. The State is assumed legitimate, and the mistrust emerges only where its actions don't seem aligned with how a given person believes it should want to act. As mentioned in this video, people see certain results as questionable, but not the function itself. I'd argue that there is some thoughtfulness to it, and that people who mistrust the government are at least aware of their own ideology, their own interests, but so many of us (including myself here, baby Anarchist that I am) lack the language to articulate such interests and ideas. As a result, we are shoehorned into using the language that the State provides us, which limits our expression and our thought, again as illustrated in the video. We can only really ask the questions we're able to articulate. I think there's a tendency to blame Americans for being stupid, individually, while at the same time making claims about systematic power... It's not as cathartic, but American un-thoughtfulness is also a product of the system.

I was a fan of Adam Ruins Everything, and still think about a lot of what it taught me to this day. When I heard through Drawfee that he was doing this show, I questioned it immediately. He talked about some of the jobs and the workers he interviewed on there, and the people he mentioned only made my suspicions worse. Sure, he talked about the food inspector people, but one thing my high school _did_ teach me was that the food industry is garbage, so I wasn't very surprised by that. But the other two: There are people in the military who fly into hurricanes for accurate weather forecasts? Why is that a military job? And why did he frame the people who liquidate bank assets as good? They're protecting a failing economy! It was, very much, propaganda. Very ✨reform good✨ of him. Also, I don't recall him mentioning that Obama produced the show. The idea of that sends a shiver up my spine.

AIUI, it’s because the military is one of the only arms of the state where risks of death in the course of the job. Plus, it’s one of the only parts of the state that is allowed a large large budget. Much like test pilot is a military job even for civilian planes. I think it’s a screwed up way to organise it but I’m pretty sure that’s the reasoning. Like, see also the Army Corps of Engineers - they’re not doing traditional military jobs in a lot of cases, a lot of it is just big large scale civil engineering. But the army is the easiest way to get the budget and jurisdiction for those projects. Again, I think it’s really silly, there should be other groups to do this stuff. Still watching the video but I thought I would add in something from my field, ICT for Development. When technology gets brought up it is often either described as having intrinsic positive or negative value, or being value neutral. A different theory that has been gaining traction recently is the amplification model, that technology acts as an amplification factor, amplifying the will of anyone who interacts with it. This goes a long way to explain why technological development pairs so well with capitalist growth. And when the military invests a lot of money, technological growth happens very quickly and amplifies the harm the military does. Sorry if this is a bit off topic, but I really enjoy cross-pollination of ideas and how they influence each other in different fields

I found myself making a lot of the same arguments and having the same nitpicks as you after watching the series! I was frustrated with some of the dancing around issues such as capitalism's role in US government, the military as an imperialist oppressive force the world over, etc. Especially in the light of Adam Conover's attempts at self reflection in his final episode of Adam Ruins Everything, I hoped this show would be a radical reinvention of his Adam Ruins character. After those first 5 minutes though he never really won me back because I knew everything he had put into the show was rubber stamped by Obama and his ilk. Having said all of that, my girlfriend made a good point to me at the end of the show that, while it may not completely forgive Adam, made me think of it in a different light. The show wasn't made for me, it was made to bring awareness to people that ripping the whole government down would mean filling in a lot of jobs and roles we don't know exist. I don't think that's a reason not to abolish the government, but it's a good start to realizing (like with the national weather service episode) that communities can step in and fill roles that government traditionally fills, but that it has to be a concerted, consistent effort to replace what is lost. And I admit, we Americans are not as far along in terms of political consciousness as the French, Irish, South Americans and other people around the world. This show may have helped some people left of center or in the middle politically to question certain institutions, while understanding their capacity for good, have been corrupted by private/capitalist/imperialist interests. Thats the problem though. The state’s employees being good or bad people doesn’t matter at all , its completely irrelevant when the overarching system and policy are determined by economic and political interests of the ruling class. Also “ripping the whole government down” is not the only way to apply democratic pressure onto authority structures; *but this is the way that elites typically portray democratic influences (chaotic and anti-social).*

@@ultravioletiris6241 By no means was I defending the "few good people" in the government, in fact I liked how John criticized that in Adam's coverage. The national weather service episode had a component that covered the vast volunteer workforce that gathers data locally, pools it together, and forms our live national weather map. It seemed like a shining example of individuals working independently but pooling resources and data to do a good thing, only marginally aided by the government. As for ripping the government down, I think ultimately, if one is for the dismantling of hierarchies (race, gender, imperial/ capitalist) it is unavoidable to want an end to government. I'm not arguing that would be chaotic or antisocial, I think the community organizing (like the weather service) is a perfect example of how we can work without the government! My only assertion was that to bridge the gap between neoliberals/ "just vote" types and full on leftist revolutionary types, this show might not have been a complete loss because it shows things our government does poorly that we can do better, or things our government doesn't do that can motivate people to look into how they can do better.

@@veryirishdude I think one of the main criticisms from this video is that Adam’s show softens the US governments’ flaws and actually contributes to propagandizing the left to support an Imperial regime. The suggestions in Adam’s show are usually oriented to strengthening and expanding the government in order to advance progressivism. This is basically the opposite of contributing to a leftist environment which will eventually begin to dismantle government. But yea all the stuff about community you said sounds great 👍🏿 too bad there arent shows about that instead of shows with a former head-of-state as executive producer. IMO one of the biggest hurdles to dismantling government is going to be rightwing folks and leftwing folks alike that support expansive government because it goes along with their favorite political issues, whether that is border control or consumer protection.

When Adam has his own platform on tiktok, he is WAY more critical than he was on the g word. Like, I didn't know about some of the things he spotlighted. I still found it useful. I think it was worth doing. Also, considering how badly the state has become oppressive in the past month, and how much leftists have ignored electoral politics to our own detriment, I think his admonishment that we need to start participating in state and local government is completely valid. The reason Republicans were able to pack the court and are now literally putting a case before said court to essentially take away voting rights, is because we haven't fought back against them at the local level for the past 30ish years. American government is complicated and problematic and ignoring it is going to get more people killed. We need to do what you're recommending but we also need to have electoral power. Don't ignore that harm reduction is necessary.

I can see you analysing his responses and planning your response for this video. (Also your mild surprise when he says a more honest and accurate assessment at 24:45 is really interesting to watch.) The “moral hazard” part is interesting, because it essentially takes the idea that the American state would naturally enact maximum violence on everywhere if it could, and was simply being held back by a lack of automation. “All those strikes you wanted to order but couldn’t” is a really interesting framing. As if that’s a reasonable and expected baseline. Edit: it was cute how clearly drunk you were in the outro voiceover!

31:00 - going back earlier, to the 2008 Presidential election - Senator Barack Obama suspended his Presidential campaign activities during a crucial week (I think it was in October) in order to whip his fellow Democratic Senators to vote in favor of Bush's massive bailout of the corporate criminals who crashed the world economy. And of course he then went on to hire representatives of those corporate criminals to run his government's economic policy, in continuity with previous administrations. (Because they're the experts.)

I haven't seen Adam's new series, but TBH he did quite a good job of being critical of systems within TruTV's system via Adam Ruins Everything. So like there is no excuse for the show based on how John describes it. You can work within the system and still not do the classic "I'm not doing propaganda" propaganda. If Adam wanted to, he could probably make a very comfortable living self producing content. He clearly has the social media following, he could easily be a good quality leftist KZitemr. Again, HE HAS THE CELEBRITY AND THE PLATFORM TO EASILY SUCCEED. But he seems to be so into the Hollywood industry that he can't see that he can make content and a living (since he has a built in audience) WITHOUT working with literal war criminals like Obama.

Although Adam certainly overemphasizes the role of "swell guys" in the government, I feel like you also underemphasize it. You are right that "the state" itself is not a person and does not care, but I think it's hugely relevant that many and perhaps most of the individuals who are part of that system are real people who do want to do good, or at the very least who do have their own moral compass. I think by minimizing the role of people you risk framing the state as this kind of force of nature that can't be fully comprehend or improved.

Awesome video! I have a question about good (leftist) propaganda. I've been learning about the "spectrum of allies" concept, that basically every movement has active and passive allies, a bunch of people who are neutral, and active and passive opponents. You first want to move each group one step closer to your side, and each requires a different message. I think some leftists would defend The G Word as something that moves a neutral person into a passive supporter, and I absolutely disagree. Do you have some examples (and/or qualities) of media geared toward this "movable middle" in an effective way? (Not just Chicken Run)

The end of the video provides further evidence for this fear: "thanks Adam for talking to me, that was a good conversation, seems like a sound guy, I hope this wasn't too mean". Nearly every clip shown of the conversation is immediately followed up with powerful critiques that Adam is not asked to respond to. You were too "nice".

I have to limit myself to even showing students varied perspectives which I leave as a use and believe it, or not, up to you. Where I have to be in public modern day public school system has to be equal even if we think one is morally wrong. So can you recommend anything else that shows the leftist perspective that actually peeks the interest of students and falls within an acceptable objective view? I may agree with you on some and maybe many points, but without perspectives like Adam, many of my students fall into the perspectives they hear everyday because the environment reinforces the system they are in. I don’t want to become another apologist for capitalism, but my students have to truly see the government as something that can be negative and positive, before I can go by further to imagine any kind of dismantling. I am not trying to brainwash my students with anything, I just want them to see all perspectives so they can start to wrestle with that in their not fully developed minds.

I think Adam is a well meaning person who seems to have pretty decent personal politics. But he also is just a person and it's pretty clear, especially as you manage to illustrate, that not only was he the "right choice" for Obama's propaganda piece as they could see he has a track record of playing nice with producers, but Adam himself clearly has some innate biases (I'd say any American does -- I am one myself and I know that from childhood onward I've been subjected to so much pro-capitalist, pro-imperialist, pro-nationalist propaganda that I am definitely going to miss some) and Adam even did the _nice_ thing of self-censoring by _assuming_ he knew where the limits were that he couldn't push and focusing instead on the exceedingly minor areas where he could do some "pushback" that would in no way be any real challenge to the capitalists/imperialist powers. Also worth noting, as producer Obama controlled what money was spent on and what resources would be made available. No matter what Adam might write, that's going to rather strongly curtail deviation from the intended message the producer (Obama) wants to get across. Adam may have had to deal with far, far less in production values, but he could have fund his show the same way most Americans pay medical debts -- make a gofundme account and beg for money. Honestly, it's the same thing he was doing by getting Obama to produce the show, the only difference is that when you beg from money from one of the wealthy and powerful that's seen as more socially acceptable, whereas getting money from public funding and retaining far more creative control is... less so? But that's also why Adam was the right choice for them. He's used to doing things a certain way. I would be surprised if he at any point gave serious thought to deviating from the wealthy-producer-controls-the-show way of doing it because that's what he has done all his career. It's what he is, essentially, trained to do. And I think that Adam's counters to these points are the defenses he gives to himself to make himself feel better about giving so much of himself to people he seems to strongly oppose politically but been made to believe he can't do without.

To give The G Word credit where it's due, the target audience are people who only vote every 4 years for presidential races and sees the rest of the system as a black box. The show did it's job well enough in showing how the different parts are invisible when it's working correctly, but also how only looking at the federal level is missing out on the immediacy that the local level can provide. I would honestly say that The G Word is a good show in that it's genuine (if not a bit too optimistic) in the help it's providing. It's not going to make a leftist out of the average viewer, but I hope it's at least pulling viewers away from the status quo of "both sides bad and I just wanna grill"

@Solinaru
2 жыл бұрын
@@ultravioletiris6241 "both sides bad" isn't bad on the face of it, but it needs a place to channel the discussion. As an example, people who are "both sides bad" usually are south park libertarians. They'll want to see things like equality and respect, but only if they can keep doing what they've been doing since the 50's. (ie, if it means they can't use slurs, then it's political correctness gone amok) When you go "both sides bad" you have to make sure to terminate it with a call to action. "Both sides bad, but someone needs to steer this plane" helps in getting people to not go doomer and give up.

I think you’re absolutely right to point out this show as liberalism and neoliberalism incarnate, however I still think this show can be useful to educate people who are not fully ready to deprogram from those systems as of yet. From personal experience, there was a line in this show that, back when I was a republican, made me release that ideology, and switch to being Dem. Adam said that the govt is meant to help people, and several years ago, that line was the tipping point for the start of my radicalization. Fast forward to now, and I’m a Black Socialist. The show talked about things I didn’t even know about the govt, and, though surface level instead of criticizing the system as a whole, it offers critiques on real world issues that have been silenced throughout the media scape (mainly thinking of his Covid section). I also think it’s integral that you absolutely read it for filth for those who are in a position to leave liberalism behind as well.
