It was these lighter, ordinary moments like here that built Carson's fame as much as any of his famous guests, monologues or recurring bits. He was comfortable to the point of brilliance at just being ordinary on television, being himself. He could take a topic he KNOWS most of the audience isn't probably into, talking about birds from a PBS special, and make it entertaining through his OWN interest and bring his audience along with him. Nowadays, talk show hosts are so terrified of challenging their audience's attention span, of possibly being boring that ironically enough they ARE actually more boring because of it. Carson had a natural gravitas and authority about him, he commanded that stage even just talking about birds in the air. Being of the "greatest generation" and World War II vets, Ed and Johnny both knew how precious life was and how to enjoy its small moments with perspective. It's part of what was lost with their departure, people who built modern media from a natural solidity of character and depth.

Ed was a lot more than just Johnny's sidekick. He was a carrier-qualified fighter pilot, an instructor for F4U corsair fighters, and was a forward air controller (FAC) during the Korean war, flying a Cessna O-1 bird dog. His job was to fly slowly over enemy territory in order to draw anti-aircraft fire so the fighters could attack the gun emplacements. He retired as a full colonel. Johnny Carson was a guy who did everything with his mouth. To be known only as Johnny's sidekick must have been tough for Ed.

Some sharks must swim constantly in order to keep oxygen-rich water flowing over their gills, but others are able to pass water through their respiratory system by a pumping motion of their pharynx. This allows them to rest on the sea floor and still breathe. However, sharks do have to swim to avoid sinking to the bottom of the water column.
