Although I was fairly young when Johnny was in his prime...MY “barometer” on his greatness, echos many of the same sentiments all of you have shared, & that is....NO ONE has ever been able to measure up to him, & the bar he set with his nonpareil talent. If you all recall, the only one to ever come reasonably close to him was Arsenio Hall. BUT, this occurred when Johnny’s retirement was imminent. Probably one of the most complex (& complicated) superstar entertainers to ever exist. But no one can ever question his genius. We will ALL pass away before there is even the slightest chance of anyone being able to replicate Johnny and the master that he was at his craft!

Completely different kind of humor too- never try to downplay Conan or Letterman as they were perfect for their Late Night shows and always respected Johnny. Plus those that have followed along know that Conan was shafted big time by NBC which some old folks still refuse to understand. Dave and Conan were your college buddies with bizarre random humor that would try anything. Hilarious watching Dave crush things in a press or drop objects from fire towers, or Conan creating mascot dunking contests and a dog puppet roasting everything. Plus both were gold in their live remotes. I am old enough to have seen Johnny in the 80s and thankful for it but many of us resonate with the other kinds of late night skits that followed. Hell, it’s still hard to believe we’re already a few years past Dave’s last show.

Being from El Paso this is true on many Fridays each year. I once saw a Hispanic quarterback loft a long pass twenty yards down field about seven feet off the ground. He overthrew his receiver by five feet. On another occasion I saw an offensive lineman eating a burrito pulled from his pants during a timeout. I'm not saying short, plump Hispanic players are fat, but the football teams are hard pressed to beat the circus midgits when they come to town. Got to love the three ring act during halftime. Three Elephant Jokes: 1. What is the black stuff between an elephant's toes? 2. What are the pointy things sticking out of an elephant's mouth? 3. How can you tell if an elephant has played tag? Answers: 1. Slow pygmies. 2. Spears without pygmies attached. 3. There's a footprint on the pygmy's forehead. Honk if you love small people.

The Carnac skits and the Mighty Carson Art Players were always funny, but Johnny was at his best when talking to guests. He was very secure in his job and didn’t insist that every guest be a cheesy celebrity. He would have regular people that won some obscure contest from around the country. I remember seeing an old fella that had the hiccups for decades. They weren’t audible anymore, but he would have a periodic break in his speach. He told of family and friends had spent years trying to scare him out of them! Another person was invited on with a bunch of random items they had found in chicken craws. After he quit, the successors never took a break from celebrities to the point, I think the country came to realize that there were way more of them than talent available.
