I'm always amazed how few Cash or U2 fans made it to the end of this album to hear this gem. "They say they want the Kingdom, but they don't want God in it". So true for so many.

what the fuck does that even mean. seriously, i challenge anyone who venerates either u2's vapid stadium rock and/or johnny cash's ability to say faulty aphorisms in a cool voice to explain to me just what "they say they want the kingdom, but they dont want god in it" actually means with respect to any worldview relevant past the 18th century

Is from the bible: The lord lend his kingdom to some men, then he sent his servant to charge them, but they didn't pay, instead they killed the servant, as they killed Jesus. It is in the bible, jesus told that story but I don't have the detail of what chapter.

Most people think this is Johnny's song, with U2 as guests. (The title of the KZitem video suggests that this is the belief here as well "Johnny Cash feat. U2"). This is a testament to how great the song writing is. U2 wrote this with Cash in mind. At the time they did not think they would be able to get him. He had disappeared from popular music and culture (and they did not know why at the time). Major labels had left him. This was before Rick Rubin started recording with Cash (American Recordings.Hurt came later. The original NIN song was not released until 1995) This was the song that kickstarted his revival. Hurt would later launch Johnny back to mass appeal, and at the top of the charts
@herry8488

I would argue Johnny's rendition of Hurt is the most searingly powerful track he ever laid down. Near the end of his life, when he may have been considering his entry into eternity. The video clip shows the deep soul wounding pain of his life's regrets. Perhaps his sins. People he's hurt. Those of us who've been around for some time can relate. Regrets can be a heavy, heavy burden.

The lyrics of The Wanderer tells the story of a preacher who embarks on a personal journey and embraces all that the world offers: Love, knowledge, money, etc, in fact the preacher is Johnny Cash that is looking for God, the lyrics encompass an apocalyptical future, Bono said that both worked in the composition of this song in Dublin, this song was inspired by the book of Ecclesiastes, one of the books of The Holy Bible, he said that they had decided to call it the preacher but finally decided to call it the wanderer, this is more than an excellent song, this one is a masterpiece..!.

Bono also wrote 'Love Rescue Me' for Bob Dylan during the Rattle & Hum days. There's a version of Dylan singing the song by himself somewhere in the U2 vault. Dylan's record company wouldn't let him release it on R&H-- But the album version does have him singing a verse or two along with the backing vocals. Bono went through a pretty amazing period from 87-94-- He wrote songs for Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, and Johnny Cash-- All of three of them were amazing tunes.

What most people miss about the meaning of this song, is that it is the final track of U2 most experimental work (Zooropa), which is a jewel in electronic experimentation for all but the last track (The Wanderer): hence, at the end of the whole listen, one is simply overwhelmed by a mesmerizing sense of melancholy and nostalgia. Genius finale by a genius (back then, not certainly - sadly - now ) band.

What a great song! Perfect compilation with JC! At the end Bono nails those high notes like the Boshe is. Brings chills and thrills to my soul!

As we all know, Bono was mean't to sing this until he heard Johnny's version and immediately handed it over. Johnny a God on earth and now amongst the Gods. RIP fella.
