Try the studio version of Dylan's 'knocking on heaven's door'. Also... 'Higher Love' by Steve Winwood. Also... Any of Celine Dion's top songs. She can sing like no other. Literally... Also... 'Mister Bojangles' by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band... 'In the Air Tonight' by Phill Collins... None of them are 'moving' like 'Hurt', but some are pretty and you might like them. Thanks also for your video on the Star Spangled Banner. Thank you for becoming a citizen and loving our country and its freedom. And thank you for your beautiful reaction 'Hurt' by poor Johnny Cash.

Johnny lived a life. He did great things and he made bad mistakes. What you hear in his voice during this song can't be faked. It's the sound of experience that only comes with time. Experience is, as Oscar Wilde said, one thing you can't get for nothing.

"Hurt" was originally a Nine Inch Nails song, written by Trent Reznor for the band's second studio album, The Downward Spiral (1994). When Johnny Cash first asked Reznor for permission to cover the song, Reznor was flattered and ultimately gave his approval, but he had concerns that the idea "sounded a bit gimmicky." those concerns were put to rest, however, when Reznor saw the music video for Cash's cover of the song, at which point Reznor became a big fan of Cash's cover. In Reznor's words: "I pop the video in, and wow... Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps... Wow. [I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore... It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning -- different, but every bit as pure."

He became a true country star recognized wherever he performed. He made millions and won countless awards. Near the end of his life, it was all dirt and the only thing that mattered was the relationships of his life. But one by one, everyone he loved died and as an old man, there was just his wife and himself. He was tired of living and took this lyrics about someone suffering through drug addiction and made it look as if he wrote it about his life and regrets. At the end of the video, he closed the piano and lovingly caressed a symbol of his music. He never touched piano or guitar. Three months after the song was released, his wife passed and he was truly alone. Seven months later, he joined her in heaven.

Though this song is very sad and it can be hard to comprehend the weight of it, Johnny Cash left us in the best way possible. He had a very successful career and left us with this extremely powerful swan song that will guarantee that his legacy is never forgotten. Life is hard. We all have weaknesses, we all have insecurities, we all make mistakes. Johnny gave us this song as a reflection on his own life, where he confronted the fact that his past was far from perfect, but he also showed in the imagery of Christ that he believed there is life after death. He believed in mercy, in repentance, and in forgiveness, although it's hard to feel those sometimes when we're in the midst of trials and sin. I'm so glad Johnny covered this song as one of the last songs he ever sung, and to you for reacting to it honestly and openly. Never take for granted those around you.

Irina, you never have to apologize for showing such deep feelings. The woman in many of the photos in this video are of his wife June Carter Cash. He lost her not long before he himself passed away. This was likely one of his last songs and I know that the loss of his wife June (his soulmate if there ever was such a thing as a soulmate) made this song even more meaningful to him and that is why he was able to put so much emotion into it. He would gladly have given away everything he owned to have her back. Love your videos and I am sure that I speak for many people here, we are glad you have come over to the USA and we hope you learn to love it here as much as we love having you here.

I know I had the same reaction as you did. His wife died a couple of months after this. She was encouraging him to get as much done as he could with the songs because she knew he didn't have much time. When Roseanne Cash, his daughter saw this video, she told him, "It sounds like goodbye." He answered her with "It is". He died just a few months after his wife did. Right now I'm at the same age as Johnny Cash when he did this song. I've lost my husband to cancer. Regrets are so difficult to deal with. If only may be the saddest phrase in English.

I'm a huge Johnny Cash fan, & I loved your reaction. Never be sorry for your tears my dear. Especially with this one. If you really want to have a better idea about this song, watch "Walk the Line". It's pretty accurate (embellishments are at a minimum) to Johnny's life. Would take some editing because of copyright, but makes this song so much deeper for his life. Some background on this song though. The video was recorded in Feb 2003. June Carter Cash (in the video on the stairs) passed away in May 2003, shortly after this video's release. Johnny passed away in Sept 2003, this was his last recorded music video. While Trent Reznor wrote the song with heroin addiction for the lyrics ("the needle tears a hole, the old familiar sting"), Johnny had been an addict to (primarily) methamphetamines & alcohol.

Thank you for your heartfelt reaction. I didn't know of this song till a couple years ago, it's probably Johnny's best. Songs like this (and others such as "Comfortably Numb" or "Time") have more meaning the older you get. And if someone doesn't cry watching this, they probably don't have a heart or a soul.

Johnny Cash is one of the few singers that can speak to multiple generations. This song’s lyrics are pretty deep. I know it’s not his original song but still. Sometimes we don’t appreciate the people around us enough. I definitely have taken your message to heart and made sure I tell my Close family how much I appreciate them. it’s alright to cry Irina, this year has definitely had its ups and downs hasn’t it? Hang in there Irina. ♥️

His daughter was heartbroken after this song, because she commented to her dad that "it sounded like you're saying goodbye, Daddy", to which he replied, "I was, baby." He recorded this a few months after his wife, June, passed away, and 7 months before he himself passed away.

Beautiful reaction Irina, Johnny Cash is timeless, he can transcend his own genre. This song is awe inspiring to say the least. You’d love The Sound of Silence by Disturbed if you haven’t seen the KZitem video already. It’s a song originally sung by Paul Simon. He completely nails it and goes beyond his genre, metal.

Johnny Cash was. A Great Country Music legend, one of the great songwriters of our generation, although this a cover of the Nine Inch Nails song. This was his last song just before he passed away. Your reaction was honest and real which makes this a very good video. Keep up the good work!!!😎👍👍👍

I always say Trent Reznor was meant to write this song and Johnny Cash was meant to sing it. The original version by Nine Inch Nails is great. This video is so powerful because this was his last one. His wife June was worried and came down to check on him. That was her in the video. She passed shortly after this video was made and he passed not long after.

Video was recorded in February of 2003. Then June died in May of 2003. Then Johnny died in September of 2003. One of their children asked him, is he saying goodbye in this song. Johnny replied back, Yes.

Sometimes that happens to soulmates particular if they have been together most of their lives. When my Grandmother died in 98, my Grandfather died a month later. When my Auntie died at 75, her husband died 3 weeks later. Quite simply people can die from a broken heart, as some bereaved partner lose the will to live.

*Agree, the original is much better.* Johnny's voice sounds flat, you can tell he was about to croak soon. I'm happy Trent showed some respect for his elders and allowed JC to cover it. Made JC relevant again on his way out the door; after being dormant for years.
