Agreed, dude shreds harder and cleaner than 90% of metal guitarists. His style of playing is a lifestyle in it's own though, as well.

If you want to be a true musician, you have to be able to listen to all styles with an open mind. I grew up playing jazz and classical in school, taught myself guitar based on my knowledge of theory/scales from playing jazz trumpet, and nowadays I play mostly classical guitar and outlaw country. I use licks I've picked up along the way from all these genres in everything I play and write. Being open to music as a whole and not getting stuck in a genre mentality is the only way to become a truly high caliber musician, at least in my opinion.

Im a fullblooded metalhead and from time to time I listen to this kind of music to cheer myshelf up, it's a happy kind of music that you can't listen to without smiling :) It's also one of the hardest genres to play as a guitarist, Johnny Hiland is a beast without doubt and a wonderful person as well :) Cheers :D

I always find it funny that one of the most technically difficult and accomplished styles of guitar playing is called chicken pickin'.

Although he doing a lot of hybrid picking, he is doing very little chicken pickin', which uses muted tones. It's specific technique with a specific sound not so represented here. Chicken pickin' is pretty easy to do, although hard to do fast, like all techniques.

@Mark Seymour the "chicken picking" part is mainly hybrid picking
@WeAreNotAmused

Yeah it's almost like a pizzacata with the muted plunking is really what draws your ear in and the harmonics of the guitar. Really draws my mind and because u can throttle the level of how muted or unmuted the plunking is it is a fantastic way to appreciate the level of sensetivity that you can play x guitar with very cool

Hiland is amazing, but I liked that I could hear the bass the whole time. It was a good grounding for Hiland to build upon. And as a drummer, the fact that there were no drums made it ideal for me to do my thing without feeling like I had to learn a drum part.

I wouldn't doubt that he actually enjoys playing sideman to a singer Fame can actually be burden Anyone who is serious picker ought to know the name anyone I know who is a guitar player knows about him. He clearly enjoys what he does. And probably makes a respectable living going on tour with large bands and I would have to think he gets compensated quite well commensurate with his talent All the up n comers emulate his exact riffs and he remains the standard And quiet literally a benchmark for anyone who wants to be thinking of a career in music The most important thing is that he enjoys his music even when he is by himself practicing. Catharsis is a necessary component of a living a fruitful existence

Music is a real life. Miracle that is intrinsically beneficial to all of us and whether or not you are looking to pursue the career I think having a base knowledge of and involve your mind and body playing with the sound You will have a new found sense of intelligence is a boon to the mind and so many things become clear as time goes on it allows your conscious mind and the vast repository for information that your subconscious mind is in a special way that Makes you aware of thing Not all folks notice.
