He's been Collective Soul's drummer since 2012. I wish he did more clinics like he used to though, especially now that the Freehand technique is so popular in metal as the Gravity Blast. I think his implementation of it is by far the most interesting one, since it's not just about being fast, but controlling dynamics, playing different rhythms and being creative with it.

Johnny does tend to use the gravity roll a bit in everything he does but I guess it has become his signature. He certainly has taken it to a new level on this performance. Stunning. I love the sound he gets from the cymbal and snare together - almost like a gated handclap effect. As one guy commented last week some of it does indeed sound like a one man drumline (esp 8:45 onwards)

Fucking cool drummer... He can play techno beats with all the quality of acoustic drums... His technic using splash cymbals on snares sounds like a clapping hands sample that's so strange! He looks like a Mangini who would have never heard about metal:-) Mangini keeps being the god on double bass drum but this guy has a very interesting hand groove...

I personnaly find a difference between the "rabb's technique" and a "true" gravity blast. As everybody use different words to talk about a same thing, or same words about different things...I would prefer freehand technique for rabb and a gravity blast is a "true" one handed roll without using the edge of the snare. That's just my way to think...in this case,a gravity blast is truely much harder than a freehand roll...

"robotic playing" or not dude has great hands and he's cool enough to "show you how it's done". There is something to learn from complex guys like Rabb, simple guys like Willie Big Eyes Smith, or Ringo and the homeless guys that play pickle buckets on the streets for coins. You don't have to LIKE someone's playing to learn something. I look fwd to the Rabb Haters vids!
