Thing is, that's a plothole regardless. Quincy is the one guy that didn't survive the book nor married, so he wouldn't have a son. I mean, that's on top of ALL the problems of how Castlevania's Dracula and Bram Stoker's one are completely, COMPLETELY different characters. Or how Abraham Van Helsing is just...absent in any shape or form. And a lot of other stuff.

I always felt that missed a trick here in terms of the villain of this game. Elizabeth Bartley is based upon Elizabeth Báthory, the blood countess, who slaughtered hundreds of young women and bathed in their blood (real story). So just like Vlad the impaler who was the real life inspiration for Dracula, they could have developed Bartley into staple character instead of a one note villain.

I actually prefer the graphics in Bloodlines to IV, just because they are more vibrant and colorful. Castlevania IV uses brown and green for most of its color palate. Bloodlines uses a lot of red. I also like how Bloodlines was structured similar to Castlevania 1 on the NES. 6 levels and then you are done. It makes it a great pick up and play type game that you can beat in a short amount of time if you know what you are doing. I will pick up and play this game any time. This is not to say that Castlevania IV is not as good as Bloodlines, in fact I can say that IV is objectively a little bit better. But Bloodlines that pick up and play appeal that I like in classic video games, and I find myself playing Bloodlines more often than IV because of it.

Animation wise i think bloodlines is also superior. Just look at the dargon skulls totems from both games... And the gear monster is actually quite impressive for 16 bit. a forced jump trajectory and knock back make the gameplay excellent and arcade feeling. i think it was a mistake removing this for the other games. people often think "stiff" control was due to lack of programming foresight but in fact it was always a design choice by the programmers. the free floaty control requires much less programming, a stiff control is really great gameplay design and in the old days there were multiple examples of it. i will always prefer arcade style gameplay though.

Everyone keeps mentioning controls in classic Castlevania Games. Rondo is considered the best, and yet, it has stupid controls. How is it possible that Sc 4 is better than Bloodlies? You don't actually need good controls in Bloodlines. Its more of an action game than a platforming one. I think that Bloodlines has more and better bosses. No one mentions the sub weapons, or I should say, the lack of use in Sc 4.

Billy Greggory Bloodlines graphics are kinda cartoony compared to SC4's more classic Castlevania vibe. Also, Bloodlines soundtrack can't even come close to the complex compositions within SC4.
@billygreggory7899

The graphics in Bloodlines are brighter and more detailed. The stages have more than bricks and trees so they get to use more colors other than the boring shades of brown and green. Also more complex doesn't automatically mean better. I love the soundtrack in SC4 but I disagree that its superior.
@societyofsin
9 жыл бұрын
Billy Greggory The graphics are brighter, no debate there. Brighter, is not something you would expect from a dreary, depressed setting where all types of horrific monsters lurk. This is why SC4 is perfect in that regard. The SNES definitely had the capability to pull off such bright colors(as is evidenced in Super Mario World). The dark atmosphere is what a Castlevania game was known for. Also, there is more to the color palette, than just 'green' or 'brown'. As far as detail goes, SC4 is continuously noted for its high detail level. Some examples are the layers of backgrounds in stage 1, the shiny gold pieces in stage 9 and the moving books in stage 7. The list could go on, but I think you know the attention to detail that went into that game. . . As far as music goes. . . you are right, complexity doesn't necessarily equate to quality. In the instance of early 90's video game sound hardware, I think it plays a big part in making or breaking a good soundtrack. The same can be said of the NES Mega Man series. That series has notoriously complex compositions. The 8bit hardware was extremely limited, but the genius of the music composer made it shine.

I prefer Bloodlines over SCIV by a margin, but that's just me. Still, you can never go wrong with the latter. And as for Rondo of Blood, it's THE BEST old school Castlevania you could ever play!

The stiffer control means that you have to take your time and plan your moves carefully. That was the original intent behind it and imo Castlevania works better with those built in limitations

Fun bit of historical trivia. Elizabeth Bathory was infact the niece of Vlad Tepees. So the cruelty seems to run in the family.

Johnny, it's never a dull review with you. Your opinions on games are one that I look to a lot when I am trying to think of a game to play or try out. OH! BTW Can I add you on Xbox Live?

The one thing I don't like about SCIV's control is that it makes your character overpowered in relation to most of the level designs in the game, which seem built around the older control scheme. You can pretty much breeze through several levels just exploiting safe spots whereas in Bloodlines you meet most enemies head on. Enemies that are more agressive and unpredictable at that.
