So underrated. Who the hell gave Rolling Stone license to insult this man’s unreal ability with #63 in the lineup of best guitarists. Listening to Johnny Winter is an out of body experience.

He considered himself a blues guitarist exclusively and refused to market himself as a rock guitarist or play stadiums, and at that time Rolling Stone was primarily a rock rag. If he had marketed himself as a rock guitarist then he would've been classified up there with Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Beck and Eddie. If you visit the Blues Hall of Fame (of which he was twice inducted into a long time ago) you'll see him listed up there with the greatest blues guitarists that ever lived.

There are a lot of haters for the blues. The problem is most of the blues follows one scale and count. This makes all the songs sound the same when you learn how it's done. Johnny Winter is very mundane in this way. Imagine painting something, then watching a ton of other artists paint the exact same picture over and over again. It becomes a chore to spectate it. Some people really enjoy listening to it. I enjoy playing the blues but listening to someone else play the same shiz is boring to me. I wouldn't down vote, but some dudes might.

One of my favorite concerts that I ever went to was Edgar Winter. It was in New England, and i guess we were lucky to get him. He played for awhile and then, after a great set, he came out to the mic and said, People keep asking me..........where's your brother? Just then Johnny walked on stage and the crowd went wild. The rest of the concert was the two of them playing like they were back home in Texas. Amazing.

Years ago I saw Johnny Winter at the Hollywood Bowel. He stepped on stage for just some Blues. Of course Dickey Betts stepped in to see if he could match the guitar virtuoso Mr. Winter, but soon and thankfully soon, Mr. Betts simply had to sit down, watch, listen and learn. Great performance that night and the other times I saw Johnny Winter preform. He didn't play the guitar, his fingers simply glided over the strings.
