Back during my shop days, we had two motors which "ran away" on us while running out of the water on a hose (on two separate occasions and to two different mechanics). Both were 40-50hp two-cylinder loopers. Tony got one stopped by jerking the plug wires. James had the air box cover off his and stuffed rags in the carbs. Lesson: Don't walk off while a two-cylinder looper is running on a hose. Both did give ample warning; they started idling faster and faster and then ramped up quickly from there. But initially, no one knew where things were headed. It was a pretty harrowing experience each time. We never had that happen with any other model motor.

Absolutely correct on the chirp in the intake. Learned back in the late 70's about it. The engine can still be a great one without it but it does mean at least one reed is no longer closing off the intake. Some can be good with .020 gap but I always switch out reeds if I do not hear it. It just makes sense

Clear complete info and great visuals definitely are your trademarks. Your 9.9/15 hp series remains THE reference on those so I’m really looking forward for the one on that 40 hp ! Regards.

That’s wild using a drill with a tap. I’d guarantee to mess something up doing that myself!

I have an hybrid approach. I use a few taps that I’ll start by hand and switch to the power tool back and forth a few passes never letting the tap come out loose. Cheap insurance against cross-threading !

I’d bet your the guy who does armpit farts and laughs ! Lol. I think one reason you don’t see the 15” motors is because of the size of your boats , we have a lot of 14” to 18” boats that require a S.S. Motor and your boats tend to be newer ! And that’s why the 10hp to 40hp sell well up here .

Hello Brandon, Have learned alot from your videos. Any chance you could show an easy way to line up lower unit for dual tube Evinrude 115hp. It has been a nightmare for me and dont think I got it right. Again thanks for the videos and your skills on these engines.

Did the owner buy it? I'd be interested in it if not, perfect to repower an old school Boston Whaler 13.

Hi Brandon I would like to know where you get your parts from because I have a 1972 25hp Johnson and all the lower unit oil has ran down the casing thanks from a subscriber

I get them from various places. Marineengine.com has proven itself time and time again. www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1972&hp=25&model=25202R Over on the left there is a "common repair tips" column, where you'll see your seal kit and water pump. The kit you need is Sierra # 18-2684. If you want to look at other parts, you'll see them under the "gearcase" section on the right.
