I grew up in Johnstown and know many ghost stories. My gr gr grandparents survived the 1889 flood. My grandparents survived the 1936 flood and I survived the 1977 flood. I remember the flood museum when it was still the library. Always scared me. Most of my relatives are buried in Grandview cemetery.

As I understand it, the earthen dam was adequate for the job it was originally designed to accomplish, which was to maintain a reservoir no deeper than ten feet deep in keeping the Erie Canal Barge system moving adequately. However, as you well pointed out, when it was sold by the state, everything was done horribly wrong. They could have made things right when Cambria Iron Works owner Daniel Morrell had the dam inspected by a hydraulic engineer and he offered to pay for half of the necessary repairs. Only that offer fell on deaf ears.
