Join me in this seventh episode of a series of Tours of the mansions of Montreal’s Golden Square Mile - where we explore The magnificent mansion of
Clarence De Sola- a Prolific Montreal businessman who constructed this amazing house on Pine Avenue overlooking the city...
Clarence was born in 1858, Canadian born, He was the third son of the famous British-Canadian Rabbi Abraham de Sola- He was raised in a privileged environment in the golden square mile, and he apprenticed for the dry goods importer Foulds, Taylor &Co. Before establishing his own company in 1881, De Sola Brothers Company. He later became the agent for a Belgian steel and bridge manufacturer.
This unique house was constructed in 1913- And is characteristic of the Moorish style- though de Sola was Canadian born he drew his Architectual inspiration from his ancestral roots in Spain. He engaged the services of architect John Smith Archibald who helped him realize his vision- The house features many canonic moorish details such as the classic triple arched windows, deep roof eaves with soffit corbels, a clay tile roof and even an Andalusian tower- built all in Montreal limestone, with hand carved Moorish filigree detailing, the mansion is truly a masterpiece!
