Join me in this fourth episode of a series of Tours of the mansions of Montreal’s Golden Square Mile - where we explore Two mansions belonging to the #meredith family-
The first house-Charles Meredith, the younger brother, built this magnificent Palladian neoclassical home in 1907 - he was the president of the merchants Bank of Canada for 15 years, before starting his own brokerage firm C.Meredith and Co.… He commissioned the acclaimed architects The Maxwell brothers who designed this subtle architectural gem- The front door pediment is really the main architectural feature of the home, and the elegant and simple lines of the slate roof and the lime stone quoining at the corners of the building are perfect embellishments...
The second house- Sir Vincent Meredith, the older brother, built this Scottish baronial home in 1894, using the same architects as his brother, the Maxwell Brothers, the house is whimsical with classic turrets, intricately patterned brickwork and steeple dormers - Vincent Meredith who was the president of the bank of Montreal was actually knighted by King George V in 1916, he remained the president of the bank until his retirement in 1927, and lady Meredith resided in the house almost 20 years after his death…
Both houses were donated to the Royal Victoria Hospital in the 1940s and 1950s unfortunately much of the interiors have been lost, but the exteriors are still beautiful and can be appreciated by anybody walking by!
