This week we explore the church and refectory house of Sainte Croix de Lotbinière along the St Lawrence River - located between Montreal and Quebec city, this lovely historic region of Quebec has some of the most beautiful and quintessential examples of vernacular Quebec country architecture… About 15 years ago a close friend of mine purchased the refectory house here…
The historic settlements Along the St Lawrence River basin were Developed in the French Style of the seigneurial system- which was an institutional form of land distribution established in the new France colony in 1627, and was officially abolished in 1854… However 80% of the population in new France at the time of the colonial era lived in these rural areas governed by this System of land distribution and occupation
Typically small villages developed around the religious centers - and the elaborate vernacular architecture that is so characteristic of the French Canadian St. Lawrence River basin is unparalleled, and unique to this region... I always thoroughly enjoy taking the scenic route from Montreal when driving towards Quebec City, for in this stretch of riverfront one can discover and explore so many beautiful examples of early colonial architecture untouched since the days of settlement !
