I had my BSS , lifeboat including fast craft certificate, marine evacuation including marin ark, fire fighting at sea and first aid at sea. I was a chef and general steward, I always wanted to work on cruise liners but i got diabetes at 21. I think things may have changed now so after watching your vlogs even though i am 40 now you have inspired me after covid to look into weather i could still cruise

I appreciate the information you have given us and I am looking forward to a ship tour. Now that you are commencing your duties on board will you be vacating the guest cabin and moving to officers quarters? I mean if it's a new person working in that position on a new ship.
@SameShipDifferentDay

Hi JUC. This doesn't happen very often, however it can, and in this case the Safety officer (who is normally day work) will likely cover the watch until the officer has passed their familiarisation. Absolute worst case the officer could be sent home, but I have never personally seen this

Thanks for this great info. We just had our June P&O cruise out of Brisbane cancelled. Hopefully the fed govt will allow domestic cruises to begin from 31 July. Alfie is P&O likely to make completed vaccination a requirement for cruise passengers? If this is required, it will mean many of us won't be able to cruise until 2022 😥, due to the federal govt's failure to rollout the covid19 vaccination program as the PM promised.
@SameShipDifferentDay

Hi Phil it is difficult to say for Australia at this time. My best guess would be no, as crew will be tested and covid free and there are virtually no cases in Australia so domestic cruising/cruises to nowhere will likely resume. I would expect each passenger to of course need a negative test as well prior to joining.

How much does a ship change through its life? (new tech etc) or does the bridge remain as is for the life of ship because that is how it was certified? When a ship moves from one cruise line to another, does the new cruise line implement different equipment to standardize with its other ships, or does the bridge remain the same? AKA, did moving from Princess to P&O entail changes in either equipment or procedures on bridge? Since you worked on that ship before, curious as to what type of changes you noticed during familiarization. If a ship goes through a refit, would it be correct to state that new familiarisation is needed for bridge crew to learn about all changes made to ship? ( I assume any such dry dock work involves bringing ship up to new safety standards etc? BTW, it is somewaht ironic when you consider the Diamond Princess "event" last year where cruise ships were considered so unsafe but now, with only 100 crewmembers and with such tight testing/restrictions, you are likely in one of the safest places on Earth for Covid.
@SameShipDifferentDay
3 жыл бұрын
Hi JF, good questions. For the most part ships stay the same - hence why we are still referring to the original technical manual! However, you do see changes, on the bridge for example technology advances and new regulations come into force. When she launched as Dawn Princess she would be using Paper Charts as the primary means of navigation, now she has to be ENC Primary by law (although it would have been implemented anyway). When I was here as cadet we were sailing with a NACOS 3 ECDIS system, now we have NACOS Platinum. Other technology and fire safety may also be slowly implemented. We have a new rescue boat which allows the company to increase the ship's guest capacity as well for example. It is important as a deck officer to always stay on top of any changes around the ship and not to become complacent or too "comfortable". Officially a full familiarisation is not required when returning to a ship of the same class within 2 years, however, a Re-familiarisation Checklist must be completed and again must be signed off by the senior management and captain each time you join.
@jfmezei
3 жыл бұрын
@@SameShipDifferentDay Thanks ! by same "class" you mean a series of ships built sequentially for a cruise company, or are there maritime classifications for different types of ships? For airlines, when airlines merge, a 767 pilot from airline B can't start working on airline A's 767s without training because each airline outfits their 767s differently (different options on aircraft, different engines, different cockpit options) and have different operating procedures. Interesting about changing lifeboats during life of ship to increase its capacity.
