Fully trained reservist? Oxymoron.
@wilfredosoto2722
4 жыл бұрын
Did I hear that right? A few weeks of training and they’re fully trained soldiers? Am I missing something here? In the US Army all personnel (the same goes for all other branches of the military, including Reserve Components) undergo Basic Combat Training that’s 10 weeks (the Navy is 7, the Air Force is 8, the Marine Corps is 13) and then they attend their specialty schools for the job they’ve enlisted for and the shortest schools I’ve heard of is 4 weeks long. I enlisted as a US Army Reservist at 17 and did 12 weeks back then of BCT, then 12 weeks at the Signal School for my MOS (Military Occupational Specialty - what is called our jobs) which was 31M (Multi-channel Communications Equipment Operator). So I did 24 weeks of training as a Reservist. Then I got really stupid and got married and enlisted went on Active Duty with the US Army, two years later. I wasn’t required to do BCT again, but my new MOS school wasn’t due to begin until the BCT class ended and I had arrived when they did to start BCT, so I trained with them on some things because I didn’t have anything else to do, but the Drill Sergeants didn’t dog me like the Basic Trainees. They only expected me to do physical training and be ready to drive them around since I had a military driver’s license for the trucks and jeeps. I had to wait 12 weeks before my new MOS class (MOS 13F - Field Artillery Fire Support Specialist - Forward Observer) started, then is was another 12 weeks of that back then. And that doesn’t count even more training at my Reserves unit and during my 8 years on Active Duty. So a few weeks and fully trained is remarkable, just saying. Although with that Sergeant Major, I don’t think people are playing around and wasting time. Because he looks like he’d be the kind to be dogging everybody out.

Typically the journey for a British Reservist is a year worth of weekends + a 2 week camp along with a 2 week camp with their unit. But you can do a condensed basic training called Exercise Summer Soldier which is 6 Weeks to finish phase 1. You then train with your parent unit until they sign a piece of paper saying you are competent to go on your 2 week condensed phase 2 course (e.g. Infantry School), but it can take a long time to get that sign off depending on your trade or how many weekends/weekly training nights you attend). But just like any regular if you are getting deployed you will have to go through 6 Months (may vary depending on role) pre-deployment training where you train along side the unit you are going with. I went down the Officer route which is a bit different, but even with a 6 Week Course it'll take you at least 2 years from start to finish to actually get signed off as qualified
@wilfredosoto2722

Timmy Hasler thanks for the info, I must say that it still a lot of “weekend” time that doesn’t add up to much time of actual training, aside from the pre-deployment training if deployed, which by the way we do the same thing with our Reserve Component units. From what you’ve explained it sounds much like the time I spend as a volunteer Officer in the US Air Force Auxiliary, called the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), and that’s not a whole lot of time at all. Especially with most training being done online and weekends, aside from the weekly 4 hour meeting. We can participate in weekend or week long training as well as exercises too. I guess my point is that the training/skills retention curve begins to decline between training and skills use and it’s hard to see a properly trained force when the time in training is very limited. Our Squadron Cadets for example spend a lot of time, months of at least three week day evenings and weekends practicing for competitions and although very successful (earning National and Regional 5 of the 7 years they’ve competed), within a few months after competitions they’ve already lost their edge. The same holds for our Aircrews, we’re already seeing the decline in skills over the last few months due to COVID, in which both our Aircrews and Ground Search and Rescue teams have been limited in training opportunities and luckily barely needed for actual SAR missions, training being conducted mostly in the online environment, Hands on skills are suffering a great decline. I’m interested in finding out, do the British Army Reservist get paid like our US Army Reserve Component personnel do? Our Reserve Components are paid based upon their unit drills for training and the actual schools or training away from their units and their annual 2 weeks training.
@jimmoynahan9910

No you didn't. Basic British Army infantry training is 26 weeks. All UK military branch training is longer than your equivalent. "So a few weeks and fully trained is remarkable, just saying. " That wouldn't be possible. Are you really this dumb?
