I am impressed with your attitude. I was stationed on a NRF FF as part of the core crew. Working with the reservists was a good experience for me. When I deployed for Desert Storm we picked up reservists to compete our manning. The only disadvantage with reservists is that with 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks usually in the summer their level of experience didn't match those of us who did it all the time. We had 30 days from when we picked up our reservists until we were in theater. We trained really hard and we were very successful. Some of the terms you are using I had forgotten. Thanks for bringing back the memories and thank you for your service. I always kept a full seabag on the ships I was stationed on because you are right you never know when you can be deployed.

I was a naval reservist for eight years. I enlisted in what was called APG, or Advanced Pay Grade. I had never been in the military so I found a way to enlist. In my civilian life I was a licensed electrician and operating engineer. I took the ASVAP test. My score was high enough to bring me in as an E-5 Interior Communications Electrician. I was sent to the naval base in New Orleans for training. We called it, "Knife and Fork school. I already knew how to march from marching band in high school. I was very successful in the reserves. I was a member of the Naval Marine Corp Reserve center color guard. I loved it!! If I could get back in, I would do it in a heartbeat, but I don't think the navy would want a 72 year old IC-man! I was in the Reserves for 14 years and started as a E3 and made E4 in no time. However the advancement into a E5 rank was impossible. The tests were very difficult , twice per year.. and the advancement nationwide was so small that one had to almost get 100 % on these advancement tests to make the next grade , E5 or E6. It was difficult to study since the questions didn't relate at all to the work, aircraft that we were working on/ learning about on the weekends and 2 weeks per year. I looked into changing rating but most ratings were very difficult to make. i was a AT and went on several deployments with my unit.

Hey thank you for this video. I am AD trying to go AC2RC and I want to know what are your Cons of the Reserves and what do you do on the side for money because $357 for an E4 over 4 is not enough to make rent. Also do they allow you to live in military off base housing? We have a townhome and it’s military housing and we love it. Also can you find out if AD have to go back to boot camp once they transition to reserves?
@jade_yourstrulyy6149

I think the cons would be based on your viewpoint tbh. I don’t have any cons. Maybe if you don’t like your rate then satisfying that drill weekend once a month might be annoying /a con. The money is definitely not anything to live off of so you’ll definitely need a full time job/career. Or other financial arrangements. I have never heard of reservist living on base. I guess it would depend on the base and the housing situation AD does not have to go back to boot camp. Good luck
