For the laughter, Todd Phillips actually showed Joaquin a bunch of videos of people with Pseudobulbar Affect (PBA), a nervous system condition in which a person is afflicted with involuntary/uncontrollable laughing or crying - typically as a result of neurological conditions, often stemming from traumatic brain injuries (like what Arthur suffered at the hands of his mother's boyfriend when he was a child)

The joker was right though in that scene with De Niro. He did just bring him on to make fun of him. It always reminded me of how Howard Stern treated some of the people he would have. Or it’s like American Idol or the Gong Show or something. David Lettermen as well, actually, now that I think of it.

This movie, I saw my first year of uni, alone. It broke me. It drew home the reality of mental health problems and all the other things related to it. Half the crowd in the cinema laughed at Arthur, who was struggling with PBA (Pseudobulbar). I felt a pang in my heart at that. As someone who can relate to struggling with mental health - there was nothing funny. Far from it. I loved this movie, a whole lot. Still do now! Thank you for a great viewing!!!

This movie is so fascinating, I like the push on how corruption in Gotham and Thomas Wayne’s relation to it is a big factor in why the city is sinking into chaos, and how it effects patients with mental health while everything in this scenario could’ve been prevented had the rich and governing body were more concerned about it, yet another amazing part is how they’re showing that in Arthur’s mind it’s sometimes hallucination, sometimes bright and delight ideas, he doesn’t see his actions as wrong doings even tho they’re terrifying and unjustified, his embrace of “Joker” made him feel good and that’s a scene where I felt the fear of Joker and how comic accurate the character was, loved the movie, but it’s so terrifyingly hard to watch that once is enough, you guys did a great job reacting to it❤️

You guys acted like Arthur had no reason in doing anything he did when the movie was very carefully crafted to show that this could happen to anyone given enough abuse. I believe this movie was, in part, made when it was because there are a *lot* of people in this world right now that are compassionate in so far as they need to be for reputations' sake. If you can't empathize with Arthur you're either scared to go there mentally (I don't blame you) or you're *not truly compassionate* .

Since you asked, here are my thoughts. 1. I liked Joker better than The Dark Knight, and in my all time Joker just leapfrogged The Dark Knight as my nr 1. This movie for me was a psychological reward. Felt great when he killed those guys. That was actually excellent therapy, kill the bullies on the screen, in your mind, so you feel vindicated and don't have to feel like doing it in reality. This movie hit all the spots for me, best movie ever made. Especially this top spot: if you don't like someone, just leave him be or he'll kill you and I'll enjoy it. Unjustified harassment deserves death sometimes, when you kinda ask for it - even beg for it by your own actions. Knowing that things like this might happen, makes more respectful people out of us. 2. The only killing I didn't enjoy was his mother but I get why he did it. She wasn't his real mother, she was at fault for his mental problems and it was at the time he realized his life is upside down, a comedy instead of a tragedy, so he did the opposite of what he usually does to break out of his skin, taking care of his mother. Fking brilliant script psychology wise. If you didn't relate to this movie at all, like many others just not mature enough (and many others never get as mature, ever), if you do, you feel sadness and anger throughout the most of it, like Arthur does. Like I did. Definitely not everyone's perspective. 3. If this Joker would exist, I'd love him. I think if 100.000 identical Jokers would exist all over the planet, in a few weeks people would respect each other more, because about a million disrespectful people would've just been killed. lol But seriously. Food for thought as The Dark Knight never instills. 4. At the end there I think he felt something else, it's obvious when he says "You won't get it" why it's funny. And he realized it after he noticed the romance was all in his head, the realization came when you noticed "his laughter sounds like crying" (like Arthur saying - how the fck didn't I notice it before!? Fck!) and he said it when he killed his mother "I thought my life was a tragedy, when it's a fcking comedy!" that means he realized (probably because of the medication also) that he looked at his own life through the wrong lens: tragedy, it's much better to look at at as a comedy, makes much more sense to him (the lack of medication helped). So the end was the full embodiment of freedom from sadness and accepting the comedy of everything that happens on one hand, and on the other hand, what other people including his ex-self interpreted as tragedy, to him is comedy. That's why he told that woman "you wouldn't get it" because he remembered something sad from his past and felt it through his new found lens of comedy that is not an accident anymore (like it was when he didn't know about it, like witnessing the stand up and laughing at all the wrong parts, slightly confused - he was not confused about it anymore by this point), this is his true self: *the prison of tragedy does not exist anymore, everything is replaced by the freedom of comedy.* Some other movies depict that a little bit, but this is the only one that gets into the core of it. Alongside the reasons aforementioned at points 1-3, this is why for me it's the uncontested nr. 1 of all time. 5.? One final comment (not about the movie, about life - also something you can learn from this movie, I at least did): life is not a single movie; our individual lives, each one of them is a stream of movie fragments from very different movies, that you have the absolute freedom to interpret however you like, whenever you feel like it.

@@theshamelist Interesting fact:What made Joker controversial is that it’s one of the only modern films to directly attack the mainstream media, and how it is responsible for causing chaos (Murray happens to be a staunch leftist). It correctly shows that mental illness, not guns, can cause people to go insane and shoot people. Early on, Arthur is fired by his boss for carrying a gun while working as a children's party clown even though he was given the gun as a means for self-defense due to being assaulted earlier, which contributes to his further fall into madness. Joker goes even further to say that mental illness is tied directly to the media when Arthur directly confronts Murray on the set of his show, saying that he and the media only cause division and anger and that "It's enough to make anyone crazy!" Most liberal critics attacked Joker, claiming it would cause people to commit mass shootings. This is expected since the film directly attacks the media, so the media is scared of people seeing Joker since it will expose their true intentions. Plus, Todd Philips, who directed this and the Hangover, said that he had stopped making comedy films because of the backlash of the woke culture, saying: "Go try to be funny nowadays... There were articles written about why comedies don't work anymore- I'll tell you why, because all the f#%king funny guys are like, 'F#%k this sh*t, because I don't want to offend you.' fun insight: playing "My Way" at the end is just as, 🤷🏻♀️ idk...insanse, fitting, etc., because even though the tune / melody is upbeat & the message is positive & intended to be uplifting, a LOT of karaoke places BAN it because it starts fight in their establishments. i have absolutely NO idea why 🤷🏻♀️.....but it's a thing. so to have played that fits Arthur coming into his own with an upbeat tune (but tends to stir chaos). juxtaposition.

I really appreciate how this film just brutally depicts mental health. So many shows treat the mentally ill as either monsters or magical beings. So often they simplify mental treatments as just more empathy and understanding. This shows how terrifying the mentally ill can be to the general public, but also how terrifying the public can be for the mentally ill. Again, most films just throw out some platitude about being more understanding of people with behavioral issues (and yes we need to be), but the scene with mom on the bus and especially Sophie's whole "relationship." I've seen people complain that the mom is unsympathetic, but every parent I know admits they wouldn't want him around their kids either. Poor Sophie made the mistake of smiling sympathetically once. Imagine some dude breaking into your home, and then hours later him going on TV and executing the host. That's some sick trauma right there. And then of course Arthur's history and ongoing abuse by so many (his mom, his coworker, the general populace). His perception that he's been abandoned and the undeniable reality that he's not getting the care he needs. It's so brutal. Also, if your looking for Super hero movies, and I'm sure you've already got a huge list, make this a vote for "Super" 2010 by a pre-Marvel/Guardians of the Galaxy James Gunn starring Rainn Wilson. It's listed as a comedy but it's more than that and the production and look are very different than Marvel or DC.

Best part of the movie: The killing of Murray, for me representing the rich and powerful. The little guy getting his pound of flesh. It was satisfying and subversive at the same time. Hello Pretty/Funny! I confess that I didn't see this on the big screen, stupidly I wrote it off as essentially a remake of "Taxi Driver" - as if that would be a bad thing - but this was so much more. I'm not entirely sure if I'm comfortable with this being set within the Batman lore (I think it could be just as effective if it was set in the real world) but it works in the setting that it's in.
