I am in the process of redoing a 1436 Jon Boat I bought, I am using .500 inch thick rubber and cutting it into pieces wide enough to be sprayed with adhesive and laying 1/2 inch plywood on top of that, the rubber is isolating any noise between the plywood and the boat frame rails. That way the weight is low in the boat, I love the way you did yours though.

The stability is good, this boat is a little wider than most 14 footers so that helps. On a 12 footer Im sure it will be more narrow..... use your best judgement. Just don't build the decking too high up keep the center of gravity low as possible. Good luck Michael!

Boat looks awesome! Just use super glue for the trailer cracks. Then cover the cracks with scotch tape for extra support. Accuracy not Precision (3:00) ;) Accuracy is the distance from the expected value. Precision is the distance or spread of each measurement, independent of the expected value.

for the seat mounts i used a 'rivnut' tool ....little different than rivets but way stronger. Rivnuts provide a threaded anchor in the surface that you can screw a bolt into.

Thanx for the reply. Yeah it's a 1436. I been doing a lot of thinking and I've come to the conclusion that I'm gonna put in angled supports that sit on the existing floor. Keeping the weight low and in the center. I'm thinking that it should distribute the weight throughout the center of the floor were it will be the most stable. I noticed you took the seats off your boat in some of your fishing videos. Was that because they sat up to high or were they just in the way?

i've always wondered, if jon boats already don't have the best stability/center of gravity, why do most people doing these conversions make'm even less stable by basically turning the jon boat into one high ass platform with a 2-3 lip on the edge? I know thats how real bass boats are built but they're also 2-3 times wider and that makes up for the center of gravity being so high. My idea is to lower that center of gravity by taking out the benches, installing installing ply wood on the floor and sides and leave only one side with a 3/4" lip left from the front bench with 3/4" piece of ply wood inside that space as the support for the casting deck and the very front bench would be the other support for the front part of the casting deck. casting deck would just be ply wood over the those 2 support with a hatch cut into it for storage.

If you don't have a welder i would take that trailer into a trailer supply/service to have that welded. Not a real big deal but with the extra weight from the add-ons, good to be safe. Should be pretty cheap and quick for a welder to hit.
@dangerkin1

Actually what i used on the seat mount is a "Rivnut tool" different than a rivet gun. It inserts a threaded anchor into the surface that you are trying to attach to. You can screw into the rivnut... like you would a nut. So you can basically bolt the seat mount down if that makes sense. In other words they work like a nut that you can use in places where you can't get your hand behind to place a nut there. Kind of hard to explain but youtube search for rivnut that will help.

I used to have a 1436L and I had it decked out several different ways over the years. The materials that I used to deck the boat out in this video were very light. If you do it this way or similar to this way weight will not be an issue. Good luck man
@dangerkin1

it is pretty stable... i built the deck as low as i possibly could for that reason and i agree you want to evenly distribute weight. the real key is the actual boat that you are starting with. Is it at least a 1436 or wider model? and does it already seem stable? If so its probably fine to modify it but if its real narrow i would think twice.

Awesome Job, You’ve inspired me… Now this will be my new project. I have a 18ft Sky Nymph, 3 bench seats and a nice platform for support on the front. I would like to remove two middle bench seats but have been reading a lot of forums and see that it may weaken the hulls integrity by doing soo. These two seats are NOT attached to the floor, ONLY the sides... I have braces every 1 1/2 ft... Should I do this, what is your opinion?? I plan on putting Styrofoam between the braces and a .090 aluminum flooring on top and along the sides to hide the hulls brace frame... I believe this will account for the hulls strength, I’ve never used rivets before. Are they strong enough to do a project such as this, sorry this may come off as a stupid question. I want a nice duck boat
@dangerkin1
10 жыл бұрын
I'm not a big fan of cutting out the bench seats but I have seen a lot of ppl do that and it seems to work out ok. Im not sure i totally understand what you are trying to do. I have always used the benches for support for the decking / flooring if possible. And yeah the pop rivets are great for connecting the framework together but you will need rivnuts or bolts for attaching seat mounts or trolling motor mounts. Hope that helps
@haveacrown1

Would you say the boat is more or less stable after adding the deck. I have a 14' flat bottom that I'm wanting to add a deck on but I'm hearing that raising the center of gravity well make it wasn't too tip more but I'm thinking that the weight should be spread out more and there for more stable. What's your thought????

When you are adding the bracket to accept the seat pole you drilled the jon boat seat and then pop riveted it without the bracket on it and then you added the square bracket, why did you rivet just the normal jon bench and then add the square seat bracket and rivet it again? Why not just rivet the square bracket?? And from what it looks like you pop riveted into the pop rivets below am I correct on that? on the video it's around the 2:16 mark.

Hey Dan, I was wondering if you could tell me from your experience if a rivnut would be a good choice to attach a piece of composite material to an aluminum boat seat. I'm plannings on attaching the same style plate to a piece of 5/8 X 12 composite and then attaching the piece of composite to the boat. I would be interested in any thoughts you might have.
@dangerkin1
5 жыл бұрын
Hard to answer without seeing exactly what you're doing but it sounds like you're going to be attaching the same seat mount to the Trex or hardy plank material and then rivnuting it to the boat. If that is what you mean then yes I think it would work as long as the composite is as wide or wider than the seat mount and not just a deck board shape like a 1x6 or whatever they are. Needs to be wider to provide stability. I used aluminum because I wanted it to be flat on the deck cause sometimes we take the seat out and stand there.
