He is one of Australia’s favorites. He played Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar back in the 1970’s with Marcia Hines, Trevor White and others and has provided us with some wonderful and memorable music over the years. Miss him.

Loved John's singing. He wrote a rock opera called Paris (think Troy) which was released on a double album/ or double cassette. I knew the words to every song and patiently waited for the rock opera on stage, however it never happened before his death. He played Judas brilliantly in JCSS in 1972, somersaulting and cartwheeling across the stage. Hollywood Boulavade was a great single of his.

I saw that in Sydney in the early 70's, in a small theatre, they were handing out bottles of Spumante at the door as we were walking in, I still have mine, it probably tastes like vinegar now, but I hung on to it, I was about 15 or 16.

I remember my grandmother here in Denmark watching that series sometimes in the early or mid eighties, and the song six ribbons, a great song, is the reason why I know that you in certain cases can use “if I were” instead of “if I was” I had to look it up in a dictionary though (before www) because no one could really explain it to me 😅 It’s just one of those funny exemptions to a grammatical rule 😊

I love Jon English he played Jesus in the 70’s with Marcia Hines. John Farnham played it later. He had some broken ribs from a fall so they kept him in hospital and they found an Aortic Aneurysm. It was a simple surgery that went great and he was gone a couple of hours later at 66 years old on the 9th March 2016 in Newcastle Australia. We grew up in the same town in Sydney and it was never quiet if you lived near Jon. Marcia played Mary Magdalene with Jon. She arrived alone from America at 16 to audition for Hair. She thought she was going to Austria but many do. She didn’t know she was pregnant and her daughter Denny sings as well as she does. This week she celebrated 50 years performing and she never went back to where she came from. She is still amazing.

Countdown and Rage were both Australian Music TV programs. Countdown started in 1974 and ended in 1987 ( It became Countdown Revolutions in 1988 with new young host but fizzled in Popularity by then ). In Countdown's prime years of late 70s into early 80s we saw Aussie music blossom into it's greatest era. The show has icon legend status in Australia probably due to 3 things. 1) The show was on Sunday at 6,30pm so it became a family round the TV at the end of the week type thing ( shortly after, it began airing last week's episode on Saturdays ) 2) it had no competition on Sunday nights ( SOUNDS was it's main rival but was on early Saturday 9am till 12. ) 3) As mentioned a whole lot of bands local and overseas utilized Countdown as an opportunity. Due to the high viewership numbers, it was said a single appearance on Countdown could be the single factor that launched so many bands and artist. ABBA, Madonna, John Cougar Mellon camp Etc all attribute Countdown as being a major factor in launching their careers hence great record sales. THANK YOU MOLLY. RAGE started in 1987 but was a late Fri - Sat night indulgence for an older crowd. How many of us pot smokin 20 somethings stoned in our lounge chairs enjoyed the late night injection of Rage, with it's guest programmers on Friday night, you just never really knew what clip you would see next, it was often quiet an education in forgotten gems from the past. The show is still on air today.

The lead vocals may be live but the bandtrack and backing vox were prerecorded which may explain the ultra high harmonies (girls). Although, having researched and found a live version with Jon and the Foster Bros, the band covered the vocals pretty well. Countdown rarely went with full live performances because of the frantic nature of the telecast and the cost in time and money setting up equipment and mixing the sound.

I heard a story many years ago that Jon English was actually a heavy smoker, and that he decided to give up smoking for his health. But when he did, he lost some of that smokiness in his voice, and took up smoking again for this reason. I don't know whether this is really true or not. I vaguely remember someone recounting that story on some interview.
