And I’m extra glad I pushed my boundaries a little, because it turns out I, like many others, find haggis _delicious_ 😄 Nothing beats trying it for yourself because we all have a unique combination of responses to various tastes and textures and smells. I'm italian, from a small town of the South. When I was a child, my dad used to make me an egg yolk beaten up with some hot moka coffee and some sugar, to drink before school, in the morning. All raw of course. The eggs were often very fresh, from my grandparents' little chicken farm, they were so tasty. My parents told me they used to eat that when they were children too. I think that this was an habit spread all over my Country, and probably this breakfast is the prototype of "tiramisù" :) (also because some people surely eated that with some biscuits). There used to be something very similar in the Polish countryside. The sugar and egg yolks are beaten together (a mixture called kogel mogel) and then poured over a cup of coffee (not moka a kind of local version of Turkish coffee). It's not bad but not something I'd seek out - the egg keeps the coffee very hot so when you get to the coffee you're liable to burn your mouth...

I tried this recipe, with a slight revision. With the six egg yolks, I added just a dash of nutmeg and a light splash of cinnamon. While that was cooking, I made meringue with the egg whites. At the thirty minute mark, I checked to see if the yolks were done. They weren’t. So before I put them back in the oven for another 5 minutes, I put a dollup of meringue on top, again with a small hint of cinnamon and nutmeg. The stuff was delicious! Definitely strange, but delicious. Served it right out of the cup it was baked in.

@@ReggieArford I think you need to look at them a little more critically. They only look uniform because they are all the same basic size, color, and shape. Each one is completely different from all of the other ones. Little different eccentricities, a bulge in the middle of one, an extra lip on the base of another, different heights, etc. And ever present the little horizontal lines of being wheel thrown. As small as they are, it would actually be easier to repeat the process on a wheel than it be to make a mold and slip cast. Each one should only take about 20 or so minutes as there just isn’t much clay used.

Mr. Townsend, I honestly can't thank you enough for bringing the past to life for us with your videos. It's awesome the lengths you go to show us how our ancestors not only lived but survived. My grandparents were born very late 1800's and early 1900's and they had some similar things to what you show us, like the canning, and food preservation methods like you have shown us on some of the videos. Anyways, thanks for all you do for us subscribers and viewers to your channel! 😊

Totally agree. Nice to know how things were done before the advent of electricity. I loved the one he did on preserving eggs. We have ended up with so many, and they went bad because I didn't know what to do with the extras. And the earthen oven one was perfect, as I want to put one outside, as summers get too brutally hot to cook indoors here. The subsequent ones on how to actually use said oven were equally enlightening.

I write this in hopes that people may gain knowledge from my misdoings. For the last 3 winters I have grown tiresome, for the fear has gotten overwhelming and I am unsure if I am to survive the coming storm. In the hardship I find myself failing to reason with reality, it has been 2 days since I last ate and the images in my mind are becoming more restless. This morning I had concocted a sinful recipe of sustenance. In my disassociated mind I drained the contents of my mug into my morning eggs and the following result was gastly, however I noticed that potential could possibly be abundant. I employ whoever so shall find this, continue my misguided adventure into the unknown and make it something for people to remember, for my day has come and I no longer have the strength to move forward. And although I go into a long rest I know my words will echo through ages.

Hi all. In Italy we still use this recipe: coffee zabaione. As you can see from this recipe blog.giallozafferano.it/ricettepanedolci/zabaione-al-caffe/ the ingredients are the exact same. In your video, you didn't follow the recipe, as it said "Make some good strong coffe (ristretto that is in the italian recipe) [...] and sweeten it with sugar." In our italian recipe, we sweeten the coffee first, in order to have a creamy product; then we whisk the egg yolks at high velocity and then we slowly join the still hot sugary coffee paste while whisking the eggs. We keep whisking until cold. Then, some eat it as is, some bake it as said in your recipe.

Put in this mixture as many eggs as required, in their shells, and cook on very low fire for twelve hours. Coffee eggs, a marriage of caffeine (edited) and protein. What say you Starbucks? You looked a little trepidatious Jon.
@carlingnugent

The whites are protein - the yolks are nearly pure fat. That's why this recipe leaves out the whites and just leaves the yummy "creamy" part of the egg.

@@carlingnugent OMG, you're so f'n right! The egg yokes combined with the coffee ensures a low calorie breakfast with a kick starter. Perhaps the colonial women were Punked into their daily cores.

That would be a good idea, maybe each episode has a couple of recipes and then a lifestyle explanation to fill out the 30 minutes.

His shows would fit perfectly within the Create cable channel's programming. So far it's steered clear of the reality television route almost all of the other channels have taken.

Jon really isn't a fan of coffee in pretty much any form. He has managed to genuinely like a few of the recipes that have coffee in them, but not all that many. At least he tries them, which is more than a lot of people would do.

You guys really don’t know what you’re missing so quit dissing... Rini2g is right, egg yolks, sugar and coffee can be marvelous and there are several Italian recipes that do justice to this typical Icomfort food... but, alas, the one in shown in the video, though intriguing, is definitely not one of them.

A cursory search yielded some recipes with wine instead of coffee, too. Looks like there's some neat varieties to this simple tradition.

Yea, I've done it many times. It's quite good. I don't care for pumpkin flavored everything ie coffee during the holidays. Nog is better. Also, during winter, I get the good packets of powdered hot cocoa and reconstitute with black coffee. Nog or heavy whipping cream optional. Also, try good quality dark honey with a cup of black coffee. Also pretty good. My favorite though is homemade bulletproof coffee with whipped butter added. Also, fresh rendered bacon fat is also surprisingly tasty. Fat is actually pretty healthy for ya if you look into it. But only if you cut out all carbs pretty much.

I for one find this guy amazing. As someone who spent years cooking on a wood cookstove and in a Dutch oven in a hole in the ground or over open fires, I know he's one of the last with his old time knowledge. Just cooking for my 8 kids and doing outside chores, making cottage Cheese, butter ., just living life heating and cooking on wood was busy but.so comforting. The knowledge he has for the hundreds of other talents keeps me in awe of him. Wish I could go back, have all my kids small and my husband with us. He was knowledgeable like John. I would like John's knowledge back then. God bless all. Enjoy this great guy.
