I discovered a new labyrinthine connection to Doctor Who by chance the other day. I watched an old 1932 British movie called "Rome Express." Looking up the cast afterwards, I learned that one of the lead actors was the first cousin of Jon Pertwee's father. A tenuous link to the Time Lord, perhaps, but there it is.

Cool video post, thanks! My personal memories, I was around 12yo and went to the midtown NYC Hilton to a Star Trek convention around 1976/7. Later in life, I was married to my 3rd wife watching Shatner in his last Trek film in the theaters in the 1990s and Whoopi Goldberg totally F' d that experience up. True memories. I have TOS on DVD with the original effects and will play it again because my same 3rd wife never watched it and is much entertained. We have been married 27 years now, lol. I watched Dr Who with my kids when they were growing up too, FYI. Sci Fi is great.

It's technically not a Doctor Who Star Trek crossover, we never had one inside of original media, but this is still quite impressive. I didn't know this gem was even a thing. Considering all we know about the BBC, it's funny to hear William Shatner say he would play Doctor Who as that would never happen, it is as British as it gets. But it would've been fun to imagine that crossover at the time or even at the time of TNG, that would've been great for sure.

@@joevictor53 It's not "inside of original media" which is the tv series, as I implied in my comment. I know about the comic book Assimilation, but even if one argued about it being canon (which could be, though not officially), it's still Star Trek TNG, not TOS. Nothing against TNG, it's just I wish we had a cameo with the original series too, especially on television (probably never gonna happen unless the mouse owns CBS or something else happens).

Apparently Terry Nation, the creator of many.of Dr Who characters notably the Daleks and also the late 1970s/early 1980s series of Blake's 7 intended that there should be a crossover between Dr Who and Blake's 7, but the BBC didn't like the idea, there was an accidental double booking in a chalk quarry where Tom Baker came round the corner chased by some Daleks while the crew of the Scorpio in Blake's 7 were exploring a desolate planet, but that was as close as that ever came. Blake's 7 was influenced by Star Trek, but the Terran Federation in Blake's 7 was a sinister Neo-Nazi organisation and Blake and later Avon's crew were rather more Robin Hood in space and the heroes have their dark sides and often the baddies win so in that way not a lot like Star Trek or Dr Who, but with many actors from Dr Who, Space 1999, Hammer Horror & even some who appeared as guests in Star Trek I think, Paul Darrow based the character of Kerr Avon loosely on a sort of mix of Humphrey Bogart, Richard Burton and Captain Kirk. Apparently William Shatner was aware of Blake's 7 at the time.
@ReversedPolarity
Жыл бұрын
@@MichaelKearsley I totally forgot about Blake's 7 but I heard a similar story too. I actually haven't gone too deep with Blake's 7 (despite the fact it's a major series on the Big Finish catalogue too) but that would make a lot of sense. If they had continued and they had that close tie-in with Doctor Who, I bet it would've been just as interesting as a Doctor Who/Star Trek crossover. I can see Doctor Who working a lot better with Star Trek, but I believe it was not out of reach for Blake's 7. I mean, I can see the crossover dissolving into the typical Doctor Who dynamics the show is known for, but that could've been a benefit to Blake's 7 as well, especially if they added new dynamics for the show while keeping the main elements relevant. I think it could've worked. In fact, Big Finish proved that to some extent.

Two of my favourite sci-fi franchises. Though in recent instalments, I was honestly more thrilled to see the Enterprise-D return in the last season of Picard than David Tennant's return as the 14th Doctor for the 60th anniversary specials. Probably cuz we knew Tennant would return for the specials in some capacity as Whovians are so overly obsessed with him. So obsessive, it gets annoying at times. The D's return however was a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one, after its destruction in Generations.
