It’s a great show. Please don’t confuse “editing” with “scripted”. The amazing thing is how so many bars revert back to there old ways and fail a couple years later. Many of the ones that stuck to Taffer’s changes are still open years later.

The local bar in my town got rescued and my sister and I went to the opening. I have some notes on this not being "scripted". They filmed the big reveal of the new bar 3 maybe 4 times. We waited outside for hours before anyone could come in. You were only allowed to order the specialty drinks they make up for the bar or two different beers. None was allowed to stand at the bar because it would make the bar look slow and inefficient if we were standing waiting for drinks. I will say that the food and drinks were good but there is definitely some scripting going on.

They were here in Jacksonville beach FL and they redid blue water bar I had several friends that worked there Little Jon was in that episode but they simultaneously also did a bar further north in Jax in mayport where my wife occasionally bartended if short but she usually worked up near the navy base where tips are good. Anyway both bars had asked for help and both bars were rigged with cameras and they were told Jon may show up or he may go to the other bar but they wouldn't know until he walked in the door and it could be anywhere from that day to a few days from them. So basically as time went on the people tend to just think he went elsewhere and start slipping. They ended up redoing both of the bars but as far as I know the blue water bar that they renamed Sydneys was the only one that aired. They also do things like I just mentioned that they never film or air. The mayport bar had been flooded during hurricane Matthew and they were struggling because they lost most of the good staff they had which is why my wife would help out from time to time. Thier wasn't any drama or bullcrap or anything with meat on to make good tv but they did legit need a refurbished bar and more than patio furniture. They sent a crew in and gutted the place and refurbished it and helped them out with some debt. They had been there for 20 years and knew what they were doing and how to run it but it just took being shut down for a month for that dive bar to really suffer not to mention the owners home also flooding. That bar in mayport is still there and thriving the one they aired was out of business in a month. That's just how good a man Jon is. He recognized that those people need just a bit of help and would be fine and chose to help them and not film it and know enough to be sure they would be fine after. My wife said he was just the nicest person to her. He sat down at the bar and talked with her and the owners. She joked with him saying she was so scared he was going to yell at her and he laughed and said they weren't doing anything wrong and complimented how well they had cleaned up after the flood

Right before Covid hit they came to my home town of San Diego and “rescued” an old bar called Jolt’n Joes, transformed into “Gaslamp Social”. The bar didn’t make it and not so much because of Covid but it was already a sinking ship, there was actually a 2nd location in a neighborhood down here called La Mesa but that location shut down years before so it was pretty much already on its way out. I worked and currently still work blocks away from the Jolt’n Joes in downtown San Diego. We knew bar rescue was around because of the production trucks. Once the show and “rescue” was all said and done, a couple of us went over to check out the new bar because we’ve never been to one of his “rescued” bars so we wanted to get some insight on how it all worked. First one of the employees told us that they interviewed the employees choosing who they wanted to be on the show. When the show finally aired I checked to see how much BS I could catch, it did not take long at all. When he did his recon they showed the bar and pointed out how slow it was, they were there around December/January which is well known as the slow season in downtown for a lot of us industry folks. Next he made a comment saying it was difficult to find parking downtown (that part is true, although it’s not that difficult during the slow season, I mean if they could find spots for their production trucks it shouldn’t have been that difficult for his suv) so he did his recon “at the bar across the street” I’m pretty familiar with a lot of the bars in the area and there is no bar across the street from Jolt’n joes, he did his recon at a bar called “star lite” which is in Little Italy basically downtown’s neighbor (a whole bunch of streets away from Jolt’n joes. When then I was actually surprised to see that they didn’t make any mention to the upstairs, when they show the blue print layout of the bars on the show they left out a whole section of the bar out of the show. There’s a second level full of pool tables that was left out of the show…why? Sorry for the huge rant but I’m gonna call it like I see it. It’s an entertaining show but it’s just that, a show and not something I’d call 100% real

I personally know Susan Wood, John, Jamie, Olga, Q, Nikki, and Shayla. It's real folks. And that's why I love the show. Edit: BTW I forgot, actually Jon was going to rescue another bar in Atlanta before the Comeback. The rumor was that the other bar's owners paperwork and licences weren't legit or legal. That's exactly what I was thinking. Like you set up the cameras they're how can the employees not notice that and not think somethings up? As well as some of employees have microphones to talk and all at times

It's not a surprise he's coming, they just don't know exactly what day. These restaurants call him. The staff know the cameras are there, just not when Jon arrives.

I was told by the bar manager at Bonny and klides in Hollywood Florida, that the show required them to admit to having rats in the kitchen when they really didn’t. Bar rescue just wanted to embellish the episode. Bar rescue did provide them with all the upgrades and new design of the bar completely free.

Just because the cameras are already set up doesn't mean that it's fake. The bars and bar owners that go on the show obviously work with the producers to start the production and begin filming, before Jon even knows where he's going. It's a TV show, so it's edited and doctored for drama and ratings, but I believe Taffer when he says it's real.

How long does it take to setup the cameras? Obviously the cameras are setup, before John gets there. So it has to take more than four days.

I remember telling buddy that bar rescue wasn't fake because if you look you see the stuff he talks about in bars all the time, then the bartender chimes in and says no all that stuff is fake as she brings us our drinks and I couldn't stop myself from saying " just like the smudges on this glass are fake ? " In his voice 😂😂😂 top 3 bar moment for me , every one that heard lost their shit

It's just that much more genuine that nothing is scripted. Bar Rescue has become one of my favorite shows now, and I really enjoy seeing what he will do to fix it up. 👍

Not scripted doesn't mean not manufactured by producers for better TV though. The producers and crew are there a lot longer than Jon is, and if a bar doesn't have a major issue they can use, they will make one by the time Jon comes.

I remember the one episode where that couple pressured their daughter to use her credit to open a bar. And it wasn’t even her actual mother, it was her step-mother. They had no restaurant experience. Pissed me off.

Im a family friend of a bar owner who got rescued and I had been to the bar many times before, many more times after, and even was able to go by during filming... and I wouldn't say that its "scripted" but... if I was Jon's daughter and he gave an answer like this to the question "how real is the show", I would be a little worried that he swore on my life. The specific details of his answers are true, there are no actors, hes never been to the bar before, Jon doesn’t know whats going to happen during recon, etc, but just because there's no script doesn't mean that nothing is purposely manufactured for better TV. At least in the case of the one bar I know about, they were doing okay financially, not great, but could go on for longer than what the show said they could, just had below average reviews on google, when the producers reached out to them and had the owners sign a contract before even putting in the cameras saying that they agree to let the show say pretty much what they wanted to about the bar as it was, in exchange for a free renovation and the increase in publicity, which they agreed to. Once they were chosen for the show, the producers set up the bar and were there for about a week and a half before actually starting filming, and during that time, this place that had gotten good health inspection report just a month before these producers showed up, suddenly the back door to the alley was propped open every night when it never had been before, and there happened to be rodents living in the kitchen just in time to be caught on camera, and never seen again once the cameras left. Though I dont't doubt some of the bars are actually that bad and doing that poorly (the bars where the cleanliness/health issues have clearly built up after being neglected for a long time, or when the owners are idiots/assholes who argue with/ignore everything Jon says and put everything back as soon as the cameras are gone and eventually have to close, for example) I'm fairly sure its mostly a "We will pay you in a free renovation and good publicity to let us put you on tv and make you and your bar look worse than you actually are" type deal for many of the bars on the show.

I’ve always figured it wasn’t scripted. You can tell which owners really hated the redesigns. Especially in the early seasons you knew at the reveal which ones weren’t lasting

It's editing bcs each episode there is a complete overhaul and drastic change from how the bar and its body was, to how the last 8 or so minutes of the episode ends up being. They don't show the details of the transition, just how bad the bar and staff are, give them a stress test, then it's makeover time and their first successful night before Taffer leaves. If it only took 4 days for a completely successful transformation of a nearly-bankrupt bar to go back to successful, then those bars weren't doingall that bad after all
