You can’t love your neighbor as yourself and keep them in bondage, especially if the slave does not want to be enslaved. You can’t say that you are treating your neighbors as yourself, unless you want to be enslaved just as they are, and would chose for yourself, or your children the same fate. Hypocrisy is a sin. Many Pharisees were admonished by Jesus for it. If you don’t want it for you, but condone it for others, you are a hypocrite.

well said Chris, I wonder why many of the commentators who seem to be so charitable to Jonathan Edwards are not absolutely horrified by the fact that he owned slaves. Does one truly understand the words of Christ if you can keep others in bondage? Then how dare we regard you as an esteemed teacher if you can't even get the basics right.

I'm going to enroll in a Reformed seminary this fall and one of their Elective classes is "Jonathan Edwards & Andrew Fuller" and thanks to all your great videos I will probably take that class as one of the 5 Elective classes I get to choose.

The Quakers took a very early, corporate, stance against slavery even before Edward’s time. Benjamin Lay is worth looking at.

We should always acknowledge and marvel at God’s ability to use anyone as an instrument for His Kingdom work. Where we’ve failed in Reformed circles is we’ve lifted up these men as heroes without scrutiny and exalt them because of their profound contributions theologically. As elders and pastors we need to provide the FULL narrative when preaching and teaching. George Whitfield’s background with slavery is so difficult to read about...I do not believe we would exalt a career adulterer from the pulpit so I’m not sure why we would exalt a career slave owner. The tendency is to explain it away or to under-emphasize how horrific it is. But NO ...this historical reality does NOT qualify or justify those who attempt to promote the false theory of critical race theory or intersectionality. But we must be more discerning before we exalt these men at the very least for the sake of the weaker brother.

This commentary is excelente, my brother. I can't see how a God's man had slaves when already existed others that fighting against the slavery.

Very interesting and informative. I have not read any of Jonathan Edwards works, although I'd like to. I got the biography by Marsden and look forward to reading that. It is good to humanize the heroes of the Faith. They are to be appreciated for their dedication to the Word of God, and appreciated for the vast contribution to the Church, but they were human beings and as such fallen, and by the grace of God saved. In our culture we tend to make heroes very easily and tend to gloss over the warts and wrinkles. So, thank you for sharing!

Another excellent message. Considering the recent wave of monument cleansing, we may see an increased attack against historical heroes such as Edwards.

Sad that Edwards bought someone as a slave. But is that the whole story? Why did he buy her? Did he buy her to stop her being treated cruelly? or did he buy her to treat her as a slave? How was she treated in the household after he bought her? Was she treated as a slave or as a member of the family? Was she set free or did he keep her as a slave? Is there any information on these questions?

He owned slaves so he could have time to write his books an influence the minds of Americans. Don't you think if Jonathan Edwards was against the slave trade that heritage would be widely known? I don't know who you are but it might be hard hearing that your theological hero was actually a shady character.

Slavery is a conundrum for Calvinist just as modern abortion is. At least for those like sproul and piper who believe every act and thought was absolutely determined by God. Compare Edwards on his practicing and defending the institution, to spurgeon who defiantly opposed it while the Calvinist in the American south mocked and hated him for it. Durbin passionately and beautifully argues against abortion and says people are to blame for recent abortion laws in his city and need to repent, while he has stated endlessly that every single thing that occurs in this life is absolutely determined by God for His purposes and Glory. Yeah, it’s true every theological camp has different opinions about the same topics. But no one else in the history of the planet makes claims like Calvinist do. like someone is a slave in a racially based system because God desired for them to be such. Or a baby was chosen to be aborted for Gods glory. Obviously this doesn’t speak for every Calvinist. But they are the only ones who say anything like this.

Everyone and I mean Everyone in the Bible repented. Also, indentured servants had to be released after 7 years in the Torah unless they wanted to stay. The issue is because he is an American Christian figure, he is given a pass. Either you believe in the whole Bible or you don't. He didn't fulfill the office of a Bishop properly.

There's also this: Thou shalt not deliver unto his master the servant which is escaped from his master unto thee: he shall dwell with thee, even among you, in that place which he shall choose in one of thy gates, where it liketh him best: thou shalt not oppress him. There's a letter written by the first bishop of Rome in which is documented his return of a runaway slave. Take heed, Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the leaven of Herod. Yeah, Christians have created idols out of men like Edwards, but also out of other men.

Making other regular people, like yourself in many ways a " Hero", until you find their flaw. And realize, hopefully, by thinking that If that person he purchased like property were your family or dear friend.... would they still be your Hero? I guess he has good traits, also like most people, but it's hard to turn human beings into heroes, when their flaws are on the horrible side of the spectrum. And saying " don't judge, because everyone did it back then" shows what deep down some people are comfortable with, or could be. I just read Benjamin Lay, the Quarter Dwarf, slave abolitionist, he wouldn't say, "pfft! It's normal, everyone owns a person, so I should shut up and not judge"

It's important to be honest about ourselves and others. None of us are perfect, the bible is clear on that and we won't be until heaven. However there seems to be a danger of hunting for people's failings and acting as if they should automatically be disregarded because of them. The gospel is bigger than ours failings. We should be wise to avoid following others sins, but not act like we're really any better. Great video as always!

I am black I also like Edwards but I'm not trying to be biased I don't mind that he owned slaves because many of the Patriarchs in the Bible had slaves but if you treated them like family and treated them in a Biblical way and did not treat them like animals or dehumanize them I am totally fine with it no I do not believe that slavery was right because there was many sinful acts that were endorsed and slavery but the fact that he had slaves is not my problem the fact is if he hurt or dehumanize those slaves will be my problem
