In this class we put focus on using footwork inspired by Jonathan Haggerty. At the time of class Haggerty is the ONE Championship Bantamweight Champion in Muay Thai and Kickboxing champion. His solid fundamentals with classic Muay Thai techniques paired with his unorthodox approaches to his footwork allows him to setup a wide range of offensive techniques with his switch-hitting style.
FOOTWORK
Haggerty uses a stepback into southpaw footwork which isnt anything new, but how he swings his shoulders a long with his hips is a slight deviation from the normal Thai Style stepback where the stance stays normally more square. We focused on using this footwork off the recovery after throwing a left switch kick. We focused on ONE step, TWO steps, and THREE steps. Any of these techniques can be used off of a single step but to learn the rhythm of the footwork we used multiple steps to really nail down the timing of each step.
ONE STEP SETUPS
1. The first step setup that we used was firing a TEEP from the southpaw stance after recovering the left kick. Key Notes to focus on is not rushing the teep if the opponent isn't pressing foward quickly. Allowing the opponent to advance and timing the teep to let the opponent run into the push kick.
2. The second setup off one step we used was firing another LEFT kick from southpaw. The timing of the LEFT roundkick is similiar to the teep with it's timing with the opponents foward step to fall into the kick as they advance.
TWO STEP SETUP
1. This footwork is the normal recovery footwork used after firing the LEFT switch kick. Step once into southpaw then again into your ORTHODOX STANCE. The main focus is to appear like you are disengaging and when stepping the RIGHT leg back into ORTHODOX to step onto the balls of your feet in order to quickly spring back into the pocket to fire the RIGHT CROSS as the opponent is advancing forward.
THREE STEP SETUPS
1. The first setup off 3 steps is stepping the knee over high as if to throw a left kick. Instead upon landing the foot, dig a hard shovel hook to the liver followed by a power LOW KICK landing a long the top of the opponent's lead leg. Haggerty can be seen in multiple fights using this liver shot setup, notably in his fight with Monkolpetch.
2. The second setup is firing the LEFT KNEE to the opponent's liver or solar plexus as they step in on your third step. Like all the other setups, stepping back onto the balls of your foot and not being flat footed is key in order to spring forward to land the trap.
3. The third and final setup we worked on was stepping over and hand-trapping the opponents right hand with your left, pulling their guard down and firing the slicing HORIZONTAL or DOWN LEFT ELBOW. This particular technique is good to use against a MUAY KHAO that likes to walk forward with a high guard as they are looking to absorb shots to close the distance to engage in the clinch. We also followed this handtrap setup with a 90 degree pivot in order to angle off before the opponent has an oppurtunity to tie up the hands and secure the clinch.
