Rendon didn't say he didn't want to play anymore. He eluded to this: if his family or faith calls him away from the game, he's going. At the MLB level, the game is a job, and yes, most players want to win, but I think Rendon is suggesting that as a commodity, he has to first be loyal to himself. Every MLB player is selfish to a higher degree than most people. If you're not, you cannot get to that level. Front offices are rarely loyal to players, so a player has to learn to be loyal to himself first and foremost above all else.

Julio signed his contract in 2022 midseason, it was announced on August 26th, the next day through the end of the season (Aug 27th through Oct 5th), he posted a .356/.423/.690 triple slash, good for a 1.112 OPS with 31 H, 20 R, 5 2B, 8 HR, 11 RBI, 2 SB, 9 BB, and only 19 SO.... That's on pace for 217 H, 140 R, 35 2B, 56 HR, 77 RBI, 63 BB, and 133 SO with 18 SB. I can safely say his big contract didn't lead to him mailing in the rest of the season, nor did it lead to his 2023 struggles. He's just young and playing in the league with the fastest average velo in baseball history, while still smashing records without even peaking as a player. He'll have a .950 OPS or higher in 2024.
